Isaac Lythgoe’s works as part of
Phantasmagoria: Folkloric Sculpture for the Digital Age
at Henry Moore Institute

This major group exhibition brings together a new generation of artists exploring how digital technologies are reshaping what sculpture can be, and how it can be used to tell stories about our past, present, and future.

Exhibiting artists include Jürgen Baumann, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Nina Davies, Joey Holder, Joe Moss, Most Dismal Swamp, Steph Linn and Philip Speakman, Isaac Lythgoe and Rustan Söderling. Working across sculpture, moving image, performance, video games and installation, new and recent work in the exhibition shares a fascination with the collision of folklore and contemporary digital culture.

Over the past decade, renewed interest in folk traditions, myth and occult practices has emerged alongside the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, gaming and social media. In Phantasmagoria, these seemingly distant fields of creativity converge. The artists fuse ancient narrative structures with digital processes such as AI manipulation, 3D printing and platform-based media, revealing how fiction, enchantment and collective belief continue to shape our world today.

This exhibition is haunted by the figure of folk singer Judee Sill, who enjoyed a short and flamboyant career in the early 1970s. Emerging from a period of sexual liberation driven by the hippie counterculture, Judee Sill’s mystical poetry resonates particularly strongly with Nils Alix-Tabeling. The sensitive energy of her songs helps us navigate difficult times, accompanying the sense of disappearance and loss towards a form of rebirth. Like a catabasis—as Greek mythology refers to the hero’s initiatory descent into the underworld—the exhibition invites an introspective plunge into these realms of gentle melancholy.

A woman in a fiery red wig crawls across the floor in bootfoot waders and a black unitard. Later, the same woman, now in light blue stiletto boots, plays with a robot vacuum cleaner, in another scene she sings Brian Hyland’s song Sealed With A Kiss wearing a poodle mask. A mysterious figure whose pointedly clichéd appearance becomes dangerously more erotic with each outfit change. Alexandra Bachzetsis uses this solo to explore what this may lead to. Incorporating elements of autofiction, self-documentation and autoeroticism, the Swiss artist concentrates on pop-cultural source material for expressivity, identification and desire. She examines how commercial genres and the arts influence each other through the use of gesture and movement.

But what about now? What forces still compel us to form connections amid growing polarisation, narcissism, constant networking, the commodification of relationships, and multiple crises and wars? Is it still possible to establish a relationship with the other? Can we construct ourselves positively through the other – seeing them not only as an enemy or a friend? And if so, might this be one of the functions of contemporary art? What frightens us today – and what might make us flee an exhibition? Finally: how, despite everything, can we become friends?

Nils Alix-Tabeling’s practice takes many forms, including sculpture, performance and painting. Drawing on ancient myths, pagan rituals and science fiction, his work also addresses contemporary concerns such as q***r issues and ecological emergencies. Blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, the artist unfolds an imaginary world populated by monsters and marvellous creatures, as well as forgotten or marginalised historical figures. He develops a transhistorical, symbolist and hybrid universe that defies social norms and fixed representations.

The journey culminates in an installation combining video, sculpture, song and performance, like a poetic ceremony that captures the spiritual essence of Judee Sill’s music.

The international group exhibition ‘Superglue, or Inventing the Friend’, marks a new phase for the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), inaugurating the exhibition programme under its new director. Predominantly presenting figurative art, the exhibition invites a reconsideration of the CAC’s relationship with its audience. The exhibition’s abundance of figures creates an aesthetic and social environment grounded in diversity – one that may both facilitate encounters with the other while questioning identity (of the individual, the depicted figure, or the (post)human), the possibility of connection with the other, and the authenticity and meaning of contemporary art itself.

Zuza Golińska explores the relationships between humans, public spaces, and architecture. Her work is strongly influenced by the ways people behave in, and interact with, the public realm. In her recent works, she has focused on imagining future landscapes, with a particular emphasis on the remnants of human presence–such as ruins and industrial byproducts–marking the end of human-led labor.

A translucent wall made of clear cellular polycarbonate panels mounted on a lightweight frame covers the front of the booth and features an entrance.

As viewers pass by, they encounter a scene filled with the shadows of moving figures inside, as if they are observing it through a translucent “veil”—misty dreams sprouting in a greenhouse under bright artificial light or insects inside a lampshade.

The structure, with its wall of semi-transparent industrial material, resembles a public transportation shelter covered in crude graffiti scratched with a sharp object conveying incomprehensible messages.

Upon entering, one could see drawings on the walls. The main theme is a train station, a maze of corridors, and travelers.
