For decades, surgery, seen as too expensive and out-of-reach, was excluded from global health policy

That false narrative has changed throughout the years

Today at INCISION Poland, we’re detailing the major events that helped bring global surgery to the forefront.

From the Alma-Ata Declaration in 1978 to the Lancet Commission’s Global Surgery 2030 report and WHO Resolution WHA68.15 in 2015, our timeline highlights some of the major policy milestones that helped shift surgery from the margins of global health into mainstream public health policy.

Facing a medical emergency when help is 10 hours away. 🩺

This case study demonstrates the significant difficulties in treating appendicitis in a remote, rural location, where systemic barriers can transform a standard procedure into a race against time.
In the end, the patient's localised infection and perforated appendix were the terrible result of cumulative systemic delays rather than the disease itself.

🌍 Happy Global Surgery Day 2026!

A successful operation is the outcome of an effective system, not merely a procedure. From the first emergency call to the final recovery in the ICU, every link in the chain must hold.

This year's theme, "Systems Do Save Lives", serves as a reminder that the only way to guarantee everyone has safe access is to integrate emergency, critical, and surgical care.

Because when we make the system stronger, we’re not just saving time. We’re saving lives. 🏥✨

In medicine, cost is often the difference between life and death.

Especially in low- and middle-income countries, financial barriers keep life-saving training out of reach.

But across the globe, health professionals and innovators are refusing to wait for solutions, instead, they're building their own.

Welcome to Part 2 of our Simulation Stories with INCISION Poland. 💡🩺

Today, we are highlighting two more incredible innovations:
1. The Lamb Leg Bleeding Simulation
2. STITCH: Managing Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH)

Did You Know? 🌍

By 2030, the world could face a shortage of 11 million healthcare workers, according to the World Health Organization.

Underinvestment in training, deployment challenges, and recent aid cuts could worsen these shortages, with an increased shortage of 600,000 workers in Africa in particular.

Global Surgery is a rapidly developing field that brings together clinicians from all walks of life with a common goal: providing high-quality, accessible healthcare for all.

Today, Incision Poland looks at the different faces of Global Surgery and shines a light on the work they have done.

At Incision, we know that although healthcare is a human right, the reality is far from equitable. It is estimated that 5 billion people, which is more than half the world’s population. do not have access to safe and timely surgical care.

But it doesn’t have to be like this. The field of Global Surgery works tirelessly to address this inequality and bring safe healthcare to every corner of the globe.

Stay tuned as we highlight the icons leading this change!
