Glutes 💦

You do not need to lift your leg very high to challenge your glutes in the water. The key is keeping your body tall, your core gently engaged, and each movement slow and controlled.

Start with the basic version, then progress when you can keep your hips steady without leaning or arching your back. The water adds resistance while keeping the movement low impact, perfect for building strength and confidence one level at a time.

Have you ever finished a swim feeling uncomfortable in your stomach? 💦

Stomach discomfort after swimming can happen for several reasons, from swallowing water or overworking your abdominal muscles to dehydration or possible waterborne illness.

In today’s Swim Tip Sunday, I’m sharing four things to check first. Most cases can be mild, but severe or persistent pain, vomiting, fever, or diarrhea are worth taking seriously and discussing with a healthcare professional.

Save this post for later, then read the full guide through the link in the comments.

Why choose water for your workouts? 💧

Water provides a combination that is difficult to recreate in quite the same way on land:

💧 Buoyancy supports part of your body weight and can reduce the impact of many movements.

💪 Drag creates resistance as you move your body through the water, helping challenge your muscles.

⬆️ Movement speed, the surface area facing the water, body position and equipment can all change the challenge.

🤸 This combination can make certain movements feel more accessible while still allowing your workout to be appropriately challenging.

Water exercise is not automatically easy—and it may not be the right choice for every person or every fitness goal. However, it provides a highly adaptable environment for improving fitness, building strength and staying active.

Your shoulders do a lot more work in the water than people may realize. 💪💦

Today we’re focusing on the deltoids, the muscles around the shoulders that help lift, rotate, and control your arms through the water.

Exercises like Forward Resistance Rolls, Cross Body Arm Swings, and Hydro Arm Press can help bring that controlled shoulder work into your aqua fitness routine, all while using the natural resistance of the water.

Keep your movements controlled, your shoulders relaxed away from your ears, and focus on moving with intention rather than speed.

What shoulder exercise do you enjoy most in the pool? 👇

Feeling stiff, sore, or tight? Sometimes a little gentle movement in the pool can be a lovely place to start. 💦

In today’s Swim Tip Sunday, I’m sharing a mix of gentle stretches and supported pool movements from our latest article: a pool-wall lat stretch, chest-opening stretch, water walking, and supported leg lifts.

The goal is not to push through discomfort, it is to move slowly, stay supported, and listen to your body.

Aqua Fitness Fact 💦

Water workouts can feel different for a reason.

Harvard Health explains that water exercise can be a low-impact way to strengthen both your muscles and cardiovascular system. The gentle pressure of the water around your body can also help support circulation while you move.

That is what makes aqua fitness so powerful:

Supportive.
Low-impact.
Still effective.

Why do aquatic dumbbells work differently from land weights? 💧💪

Although they may look similar, the source and direction of resistance are different.

On land, gravity pulls a weight toward the floor. In water, buoyancy pushes a foam aquatic dumbbell toward the surface.

That upward force makes the challenge especially noticeable when you press the dumbbells downward. During a downward elbow press, for example, your triceps work against the dumbbells’ upward pull.

As the dumbbells return toward the surface, moving slowly and with control prevents buoyancy from simply carrying them upward for you.

The muscles being emphasized depend on the direction and design of the exercise. Simply holding aquatic dumbbells does not automatically make every movement more effective, the equipment must be used intentionally.

One study found greater triceps activation with floating equipment during the particular water-aerobics exercise researchers tested. You can read the complete study through the link in the first comment.

Living with osteoarthritis does not always mean avoiding movement—but finding the right type of movement and an appropriate starting point matters. 💙

Water can offer a more joint-friendly environment because:

💦 Buoyancy can reduce the weight-bearing load placed on your joints.
💪 Because water is denser than air, your muscles work against it as you move.
🌊 Water depth, speed, range of motion, and support can be adjusted to your needs.
🚶 Research suggests aquatic exercise may help some people experience less pain and move more comfortably during everyday activities.

Aquatic exercise is not a cure, and it may not be appropriate for everyone. Movements should be controlled, gradually progressed, and adjusted according to how your body responds.

Want to learn more about what the research says? Read **“Aquatic Exercise for Osteoarthritis: What the Research Says.”** I’ll add the article link in the comments.
