El camión de bomba se quedó estoqueado en la rampa. Lo amarramos a la F-250 y lo metimos.
10 yardas de hormigón, 150 pies de manguera, dos pisos de pasillo, un jueves. 1,030 pies cuadrados de topping nuevo, nivelado a las guías, listo para la losa la semana que viene.
El camión está bien. La rampa sigue igual de empinada.

Raspamos todo lo suelto de la pared con mantas abajo y aspiramos cada pedacito que no cayó en la manta, para no dejar basura en la propiedad. Raspamos las rejas igual. Primer blanco en la pared, pintura de aceite negra en las rejas. Arreglamos el empañete roto, hicimos formas para que todos los topes quedaran simétricos y le dimos la última esponja. Después, dos manos de Greek Villa.
¿La esponja más importante? La última.

Seis paradas, un domingo. Vente con nosotros.

Parada 1: llegó la luz y la planta no se apagó. Se desconecta y la oyes morir. Parada 2: elevador pegado. Botón, nada. Subimos al cuarto de máquinas, reset, bajamos, y abre. Parada 3: darle de comer a las ovejas y a los burros. Parada 4: desayuno. Parada 5: la basura. Parada 6: motor de portón nuevo. "Nunca lo he hecho en mi vida, pero aquí queda." Bella, 13 años, supervisando. El portón se mueve.

Después llega la lluvia y ya vamos caminando pa'l truck. Seis de seis. Pa' casa.

Saturday, 5 pm, A condo calls: the building won't come back on. So you drive. Country road, the hills, the roundabout, the coast. At the gate you open the transfer-switch cabinet, find the generator shut down, and reset it. It fires. You look up at the building and ask the only question that matters: "¿Tienen luz?" "Prende todo el edificio."

Twenty minutes of driving for one button. That's the job.

El cobre salió. La insulación vieja no quería.

50 pies de línea de cobre del aire, desde afuera del edificio, por el piso dentro de un tubo de PVC, hasta el cuarto master. Con los años empezó a gotear. Así que el cobre tenía que salir.

El cobre salió. La insulación no. Se quedó atorada en el PVC por los dos lados como si pagara renta.

Jetter de 4,500 PSI en la pressure washer. Snake de PVC. Horas de las dos cosas. Hasta que soltó todo de golpe y mi primo Wil se bañó.

Al otro día: 50 pies de cobre nuevo, insulación nueva puesta a mano en la sala, por el piso, y salió por el otro lado. Cementado.

El cuarto enfría otra vez. Wil ya se secó. La insulación vieja está en una bolsa.

Trying to beat the rain. We lost.

Half the sky was still blue when we started. Storm coming over the hills, so the whole site had to be covered before it got there — tarps out, hay covered, and the extension cord coming unplugged every ten minutes. Then the hills disappeared. Then lightning hit close enough that all I got out was "¡Vámonos!"

Twenty minutes later we were sitting in traffic watching it come down.

Clear sky twenty minutes before. That's Puerto Rico.

Bella went over the fence on the way out. She's fine. She supervised.

Eighteen days in one bathroom, start to finish.

It starts with a line — tape and laser on bare wall. Then the wall itself: the opening was cut into block on site, so every piece around it got measured and cut by hand on the balcony. Every cut with the vacuum on the blade.

Then the floor. Screed flat, drain set, mosaic in sheet by sheet. One tile came out wrong and came back out — everything under tile is permanent.

Then the fixtures.

That little shelf in the shower? That's for shampoo.

A microwave caught fire, and we stripped the apartment back.

The owners asked us to save the wood — the ceiling, the beams, all of it. So we left it standing and worked around it.

Then the owner came back to walk the job, and the smoke smell was still in the wood. That is the thing about smoke. It does not sit on a surface, it goes into it. You cannot wash it out and you cannot paint over it.

So the wood they had asked us to keep came down too. Out by hand, onto the truck, in one morning.
