Not every story about Jerusalem begins with a place.
Sometimes, it begins with a person whose impact outlived their lifetime.
Every Friday, we uncover a Palestinian story worth remembering.
A name, a journey, and a legacy that still echoes today

Detained for something they have not done..
During the Jewish holiday season, Israeli authorities intensify the so-called “Preventive Detention” of Palestinians, particularly in East Jerusalem arresting people based on the assumption that they might act in the future.
No charge. No proven offence. Only suspicion.
For Israelis, the holidays mean time off.
For Palestinians, they often mean being locked in.
Jerusalem is sealed, checkpoints multiply, roads close, movement is restricted, and arrests continue.
The issue is not faith or celebration.
It is an entity that turns one people’s holiday into another people’s punishment.
A celebration cannot be built on confinement.
The story began with a small kite carried by the wind from Gaza to the other side of a very, very giant wall. It carried no explosives or flammable material only paper, sticks, and a long piece of string.
But the story is not that small.
Security forces were called in. Military meetings were held. Israeli officials described the kites as “acts of war” and threatened assassinations, targeted attacks, and the evacuation of entire neighborhoods in Gaza. All in response to kites that Israeli reports themselves said carried no explosives.
In a place where children have been deprived of homes, schools, playgrounds, and any sense of safety, even the simplest form of play can become suspicious. The Palestinian child is no longer seen as a child searching for a moment of joy among the rubble, but as a possible threat. The kite is no longer a toy, but a security issue requiring the attention of an army.
That is why we chose to tell this story through a child’s eyes: a little kite slips away, crosses a wall, and suddenly finds itself surrounded by soldiers and rifles.
This is not just a story about a kite crossing a border. It is about a system that turns playing into an accusation, fear into justification, and Palestinian childhood into something that must constantly prove its innocence.

In Qusra, in the occupied West Bank, it became a question.
Palestinian-American Luay Abu Rida watched Israeli settlers surround his family’s home through security cameras for seven nights. He flew back from Ohio but the siege continued. Three families remained confined to their homes, with food running low, water access restricted, and Palestinian movement limited under a closed military zone while settlers remained outside.
Abu Rida raised the American flag and contacted the US embassy.
The gesture did not end the siege. It exposed a contradiction: what does American citizenship mean when the citizen is Palestinian, the civilians surrounding his home are Israeli, and the country involved is armed and called an ally by Washington?
This is not an isolated story. Since the beginning of 2026, the UN has documented more than 1,430 settler attacks on Palestinians, while violence, demolitions and evictions displaced around 3,800 people nearly half of them children.
