🌧️ The results are in! Two weeks ago, we asked:
Which change is most likely to increase surface runoff after heavy rainfall?

The majority of you chose more paved surfaces:
→ 85% on LinkedIn
→ 80% on Instagram
→ 66.7% on X
And that's the correct answer!

When rain reaches the ground, some of the water can infiltrate into the soil, while some can move across the land surface as runoff. Paved surfaces are largely impermeable, limiting the opportunity for water to enter the soil and affecting the way water moves across the landscape.

This is closely related to soil sealing. The European Commission’s European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC) defines soil sealing as the covering of the soil surface with impervious materials as a result of urban development and infrastructure construction. It also notes that surrounding soils can be affected by changes in water-flow patterns.

Understanding how rainfall interacts with different land surfaces is an important part of studying hydrological systems. These processes connect with topics explored through Hydrological and Climate Variability in the Ecolution MSc.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the quiz! 🌱

🌧️ A new season, a new Ecolution MSc quiz!
As summer comes to an end and we enter September, we're turning our attention to rainfall, water movement, and surface runoff.

When heavy rainfall reaches the ground, what happens next depends partly on the surface it encounters. Some surfaces allow water to infiltrate into the soil more easily, while others can lead to more water flowing across the surface.

So, let's test your knowledge:
Which change is most likely to increase surface runoff after heavy rainfall?
1. More paved surfaces
2. Denser vegetation
3. More permeable soil
4. Greater infiltration

💬 Share your answer in the comments! We'll reveal the correct answer soon and explain why.

This week's question connects with topics explored through Hydrological and Climate Variability in the Ecolution MSc.

🛰️ The results are in: 100% chose satellite imagery!
In our latest Ecolution MSc poll, we asked:
Which type of information is commonly used to monitor environmental changes across large areas?

On LinkedIn, Instagram, and X, 100% of participants selected the correct answer: satellite imagery.

Earth observation satellites can repeatedly collect information across extensive areas, including locations that may be difficult to monitor consistently from the ground. By comparing observations over time, researchers can identify and track changes taking place across landscapes.

Satellite observations can support monitoring in areas such as:
• Vegetation and land-cover change
• Agriculture and resource mapping
• Air pollution
• Natural disasters
• Atmospheric conditions
• Long-term environmental change

This is also where geospatial knowledge becomes important. Satellite observations generate large amounts of spatial information, but making that information useful requires the ability to analyse, interpret, and connect it with environmental questions.

🌱 Healthy soils support food production, biodiversity, water regulation, and climate resilience. To protect them, we need to understand their condition.

This is the idea behind the European Commission's proposed Soil Monitoring Law, which aims to establish a common framework for monitoring soil health across the EU. The proposal seeks to improve knowledge of soil conditions, support sustainable soil management, and help Member States collect consistent data to better protect this vital resource.

However, monitoring is only one part of the process. Interpreting that information and turning it into practical action also requires the right knowledge and tools.

Within the Ecolution MSc, the course Digital Soil Mapping, Management & Protection (2W1) explores how digital technologies support the collection, analysis, and management of soil information.

Students are introduced to topics including:
• Digital soil mapping techniques
• Soil monitoring and management
• Spatial analysis and environmental data
• Sustainable approaches to soil protection

As environmental challenges continue to evolve, understanding soils through reliable data and digital technologies is becoming an increasingly important part of sustainable environmental management.

🎥 How SUSOL Students Brought Their Research to Life
How do you turn months of research into a message that people outside your field can understand and connect with?

During the two-day SUSOL Prague Thesis Communication Lab, Ecolution MSc students explored that challenge. Building on their Master's thesis work, they developed practical communication strategies to help others better understand and connect with their research.

Students reflected on their research journeys and asked important questions: Why did their thesis journey begin? What challenge are they addressing? How has their Ecolution MSc and Erasmus+ experience shaped their thinking? What contribution do they hope their work will make?

Together, they:
• Developed a communication plan for their Master's thesis
• Created and edited 30-second thesis reels
• Planned longer documentary-style stories to capture their research journey over time
• Created content ideas that could help share their work with wider audiences
• Reviewed editing, accessibility, and privacy considerations to ensure their messages were clear and responsible
• Supported one another through peer feedback, collaboration, and creative exchange

The result? Students left Prague not only with stronger research communication skills, but also with practical tools to help them share their ideas beyond academic settings.

🌍 From campus spaces to thesis stories: Ecolution MSc in Prague!

During the Ecolution MSc SUSOL Prague Thesis Communication Lab, students chose unique spots on the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague campus that reflected their SUSOL experience and connected to their Master’s thesis topics.

The workshop opened in the spirit of Erasmus+, with students reflecting on Europe as a shared learning environment shaped by exchange, collaboration, and diverse perspectives. Through a symbolic country-card and yarn-network activity, students connected their Master’s thesis topics to people, places, values, challenges, and future directions.

Students then moved from reflection to creative research communication. Using the “ECOLUTION Lens” - different approaches to thinking about their master’s thesis - they developed thesis pitches and short video scripts before choosing unique spots on campus that reflected their SUSOL experience and connected meaningfully to their Master’s thesis topics.

These campus locations became part of their short thesis reels: not just as backgrounds, but as visual symbols of their research journey, academic motivation, and potential contribution to sustainable solutions.

The result was a powerful reminder that research communication is not only about explaining an idea. It is also about showing where that idea comes from, why it matters, and how it connects to a wider European learning journey.

A big thank you to the Ecolution MSc students, to the Coordinator, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, for hosting these activities, Evolutionary Archetypes SL’s team for facilitating the communication lab, our partners at AgriWatch BV for joining our activities, and all partners involved in creating such an inspiring space for exchange, creativity, and research storytelling.
