1️⃣ Pico do Arieiro — 1,818m, above the clouds. Go 40 min before sunrise, the car park fills. 2️⃣ Fanal — thousand-year-old laurel trees in fog. Older than the Ice Age. Go early. 3️⃣ Ponta de São Lourenço — the island turns into a desert. Zero shade, so 7am or after 5pm. 4️⃣ Curral das Freiras — a village at the bottom of a valley where nuns hid from pirates in the 1500s. 5️⃣ Seixal — black sand, waterfalls into the sea, natural pools. The north coast at its best. 6️⃣ Porto Moniz — lava pools filled by the tide. Two sets: one paid, one free next door. 7️⃣ Achadas da Cruz — one of Europe’s steepest cable cars, 450m down a cliff to a pebble beach. €3 each way. Almost nobody goes. 8️⃣ Fajã dos Padres — a strip of land under a 300m cliff, reachable only by lift or boat. Vineyards, a beach, a restaurant. 9️⃣ Rua de Santa Maria — Funchal’s oldest street, every door painted by a different artist. Before 9am it’s yours. 🔟 Miradouro da Terra Grande — off the ER228, one of the greenest valleys on the island. On almost no lists. Most of these need a car. The buses won’t get you there and not at the hours worth going.
