BYOB - 6th September
15 - 23h
LA18 Foundation

We’ll be showing ‘I Don’t Know How Many Souls I Have’ at BYOB, next Sunday - 6th September LA18, in a double-channel installation setup.

Our work is a poetic videogame that reflects on the thresholds we inhabit through loss.

Losses and illnesses, together with wider political ruptures and instability, all exist within a liminal state: a condition in which individuals and societies are suspended between what has been and what is yet to come.

The title, borrowed from Fernando Pessoa's poem, speaks to the fragmentation of self at the heart of the work. Drawing from spiritual "death texts" and allegorical journeys, the player becomes a soul with no memory, wandering the world of the dead in search of a teacher already gone. You help them piece their memories back together, and meet the beings that inhabit this world along the way.

The virtual environments were built from prolonged residencies and research journeys through sacred territories marked by conflict in Myanmar and the Indian Himalayas.

Come and play with us and experience this event, which will be distributed across four floors of LA18 Foundation.
Part of Berlin New Media week, BYOB counts with an amazing line-up: installations, projection mapping, workshop, AV lives, performances and projections.

'I Don't Know How Many Souls I Have' is a transmedia installation, grounded in a poetic video game that reflects on the thresholds we inhabit through loss.

My intimate encounter with crisis became the catalyst for a broader investigation into how worlds, both internal and external, are constructed, distorted and remade.

The title, borrowed from Pessoa's poem, speaks to the fragmentation of self at the heart of the work.
Drawing from spiritual "death texts" such as the Bardo Thodol and allegorical journeys like Dante's Divine Comedy, you become a soul with no memory, wandering the world of the dead in search of a teacher already gone. You help them piece their memories back together and meet the beings that inhabit this world along the way.

The landscapes were built from research journeys through sacred territories marked by conflict in Myanmar and the Indian Himalayas.

'Souls' will be on view 24-26 July at UdK Medienhaus Galerie

'I Don’t Know How Many Souls I Have'

A video game confronting death is the oldest gesture in art, in the newest medium.

In Lascaux, or the Birth of Art (1955), Georges Bataille argues that art emerges at the moment humans become conscious of death. Cave paintings, made near burial sites, are for him the trace of a being who knows it will die and responds with play, transgression, and the sacred.

For close to a year, Federico Zurani, Edoardo Bracchi, Leon Eckard and I have been building a videogame about the thresholds we inhabit through loss.

This work is the centrepiece of a transmedia installation I have been developing since my arrival in Berlin.

You play a soul with no memory, wandering the world of the dead, searching for a teacher already gone. As you move, you try to piece your memories back together, meeting the beings that inhabit this world along the way.

The landscapes were built from research journeys through sacred territories marked by conflict in Myanmar and the Indian Himalayas.

Please join us, and come play!
