Computer Science at CMU-Qatar

Bits&Bites returned this week with a panel of upper-class students sharing the key lessons they wish they had known as first-years. Following the panel, attendees broke into group discussions to ask questions, share perspectives, and connect across classes.

Huge congrats to our very own Mohamed Shikfa on his election as this year’s Andrew Carnegie Society Scholar for the Qatar campus! This is one of the highest distinctions that a student on this campus can receive, and what a testament it is to his hard work, exceptional dedication, and unlimited passion for excellence! Reflecting on his journey, Mohamed shares: "One day, all of this will be a memory. The deadlines, the sleepless nights, the victories, the losses, the smiles, even the things I thought would matter forever. So while I am here, I want to have the courage to start, the grit to persist, and the unwavering belief to see things through. Because in the end, a life measured in years is a life counted; a life measured in moments is a life lived. May many of those moments involve delicious food🤤." Proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement with you, Mohamed!

Warm congratulations to Hana, Amal, and Sherkhan for winning the best poster design award at this year's Summer Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship (SURA) showcase! The SURA program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research under faculty supervision during the summer months. This recognition highlights not only the technical quality of the research, but also the ability to communicate complex findings clearly and visually to the community. Well done everyone!

Congratulations to our sophomore Aruzhan on making it to the Dean's List for the past spring semester! "I am very grateful for this Dean’s List recognition and excited to see where shaping my own path in computer science further takes me!", says Aruzhan, and we are just as excited to see where her journey takes her next!

Welcome Class of 2030!

Wishing a peaceful and blessed Ramadan to our community! We asked students how are they planning their days for Ramadan, and they said: “During Ramadan, it gives me a lot of time to complete my work during the day (and not use eating as an excuse to procrastinate). This Ramadan will be like playing a chess game: I have to calculate my moves, ensuring not to lose the game but also be brave enough to strike when there is opportunity. Checkmate.” Ramadan Mubarak to everyone observing the month.

Graduates from across the years met up last Thursday to reconnect, share their professional stories, and celebrate their shared history.
The gathering focused on new initiatives and additions to the alumni association, highlighting future opportunities for growth and support within the network. Beyond the official updates, the event provided a meaningful chance for members to reconnect, share their professional stories, and talk with one another about their journeys since graduation.
The evening served as a warm reminder of the lasting connections within the community!

Bands featuring some of our students achieved a clean sweep of the top three positions during the annual Backyard Battle last night. A huge round of applause to all who participated and showcased their amazing musical talents, ranging from singing to drumming, to playing the guitar on stage!
