Cristian Mungiu has once again made history at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Palme d’Or for the second time with his film Fjord. Nearly two decades after his first triumph in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Mungiu joins a very small group of directors who have received the festival’s highest honour twice.
Fjord is set in Norway and follows a deeply religious Romanian family whose strict beliefs clash with the values and institutions of a liberal Scandinavian society. Through this story, Mungiu explores themes of cultural tension, state authority, and the limits of tolerance in modern democracies.
In interviews and comments around the festival, Mungiu has described his work as a critique of extremism in all its forms, insisting that societies should remain open to questioning their own moral and political assumptions. His stance reflects a consistent concern in his cinema: how institutions meant to protect people can sometimes become rigid or oppressive, and how ideological certainty, whether religious or secular, can fracture human understanding.
Taken together, his second Palme d’Or confirms not only his status as one of Europe’s leading auteurs, but also his commitment to films that challenge audiences to think critically about authority, belief, and the tensions shaping contemporary society.
