The reason naked mole-rats evade cancer is still a mystery. Numerous hypotheses have been put forward over the years, with scientists struggling to provide a robust explanation.

It's a very different picture to the common causes of death in humans. "One in two humans are likely to get cancer," says Smith. "Mice and rats have a similar likelihood of developing cancer, but by contrast, naked-mole rats almost never get cancer – it's very rare," he says.

As we rumbled across fragile bridges, I glanced down at teal bodies of water flowing beneath the tracks while other passengers scanned the forests for grizzlies and black bears. Just as we passed Kwinitsa station, I spied a small black bear bounding away from the tracks and realised that what was becoming one of the greatest journeys of my life is just a regular commute for another.

In total, 20km of tunnels and chambers were excavated, including the near-100m long, 36m-high machine hall. To add to that, one barrage, two dams, 13 aqueducts and three generating stations were built. Danger, too, was an ever present. Some 36 workers lost their lives.

This psychological thriller might be set in an office, but it is so much more than your average workplace drama. In Severance, the main characters work for a mysterious company called Lumon, who have enormous, sparse headquarters with retro tech and creepy art. But that's not the worst of it. The central team here – and many of Lumon's employees – have undergone a procedure called severance, which is when you are divided into two selves, one inside work and one outside work– meaning that when you're in the outside world you can't remember anything that happens at work, and when you're at work, you have no recollection of your outside life.

Back on my bike, I passed sheep clip-clopping along the shore. Each animal in the 2,000-strong flock is individually owned, but the flock as a whole is communally farmed, and it's been done this way for centuries. According to the Orkney Sheep Foundation, they're the only domesticated sheep in Scotland still under a communal system of farming, whereby each shepherd keeps an eye on them as they make their way around the shore. "They run as a flock, so it's a community effort to manage them as a whole," Woodbridge said.
