In Absolute Beginners, each canvas becomes a small theatre: photographic collage, oil, acrylic, fabric, pins and found materials create vivid scenes where art history, desire, memory and mortality share the same stage.

Picasso, Duchamp, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dalí, Miró and Tàpies appear together as curious apprentices, always ready to begin again.

Join us from 18:00 to 21:00 at Piața Amzei 13, Bucharest, to discover the artist’s new show at Mobius Gallery. Returning to Bucharest for the second time, Rubert presents two complementary worlds.

On one side, dense, theatrical canvases where the whole history of painting is summoned onto a single stage and asked, disarmingly, to begin again. On the other, a quieter register: intimate portraits of solitary women whose solitude is anything but passive.

What does it mean to begin again? And if creation is an endless series of restarts, are we all, always, just beginners?

Gino Rubert’s practice has long been shaped by faces that look back at the viewer. In Absolute Beginners, his new exhibition at Mobius Gallery, the artist turns this gaze into a space of encounter, bringing together art history, memory, desire, and the quiet strangeness of everyday life.

Across his recent work, Rubert has developed a particular attention to female figures: stylised and idealised bodies that can nevertheless appear bruised, vulnerable, or on the verge of an incident. Their expressions remain guarded, melancholic, impassive, or difficult to read, while the objects they wear or hold introduce an element of ambiguity.

These details can embellish, but also unsettle. They evoke ex-votos: intimate objects that carry traces of promises, loss, and experiences that resist explanation. In Rubert’s paintings, ornament can become a wound; protection can also suggest exposure.

The artist has described these women as caryatids, figures carrying the weight of the world. Referencing the female columns of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis, they bring together grief, endurance, and contradiction. Pins, lace, ribbons, and torn layers of paint further give the works a tactile, almost sculptural presence, turning every canvas into both an image and an object.

Next week, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, a solo exhibition by Gino Rubert, opens on Friday, 18 September 2026, from 6–9 PM.

The exhibition will be on view until 10 October 2026 at Mobius Gallery, Piața Amzei 13, Bucharest.

Born in 1969 in Mexico City, Gino Rubert lives and works between Barcelona and Berlin. He is recognised as a leading figure in contemporary figurative painting, addressing the existential decadence of contemporary society with irony, humour, and a sense of cheerful indulgence.

Working across painting, video art, installation, and theatre, Rubert combines photographic collage and a wide range of materials with acrylic and oil paint. His richly layered works often explore romantic relationships, desire, and passion, creating a world where intimacy is filtered through artifice, distortion, and trompe-l’œil.

Rubert’s magical realism carries a festive, pop sensibility rooted in the Mexican worldview, where love and death are celebrated with equal intensity. His paintings first seduce the eye through their theatrical surfaces and unexpected combinations, then invite viewers to reflect on the complexities of contemporary life and human relationships.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent collections, including those of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Akiyoshidai International Art Village in Yamaguchi, MACBA and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, the Museo de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, and the Museo Gustavo de Maeztu in Estella.

Picasso, Duchamp, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dalí, Miró and Tàpies share drawing academies and painters’ studios as if they had always lived in the same room. In Rubert’s universe, even the most established names remain, in one way or another, beginners, curious, playful, and ready to start again.

The exhibition opens next week at the gallery.

Three years after 'Time to Set the Cage on Fire' introduced his singular universe to Bucharest, Rubert returns with an entirely new body of mixed-media paintings: vivid, intricate scenes in which art history, desire, memory and mortality unfold with theatrical precision.

Picasso, Duchamp, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dalí, Miró and Tàpies appear together as though they had always belonged to the same place and time. Set in drawing academies and painters’ studios, these improbable encounters imagine the great modern masters not as distant monuments, but as endlessly curious apprentices—still willing to begin again.

Working with photographic collage, oil and acrylic, fabric, pins and found materials, Rubert builds each canvas as a small stage: seductive, humorous, affectionate and faintly uncanny.

The fourth AIEVEA Salon takes place on Wednesday, September 2, at 4 PM, at the National Museum of Art of Moldova in Chișinău, within Roman Tolici’s exhibition NEW HOPE / NOUA SPERANȚĂ.

This edition brings together Svetlana Cârstean, Alexandru Cosmescu, and Dumitru Crudu, three distinct voices in contemporary literature, for a dialogue with Tolici’s works.

Drawing on the paintings in the exhibition, the guests will share personal readings and perspectives at the intersection of image, poetry, philosophy, and reflection.

Initiated by Mobius Gallery and Asociația Kontakt, AIEVEA Salon creates opportunities for deeper encounters with contemporary art in dialogue with writers, thinkers, and cultural practitioners.
