Back in August, Kin Shing travelled to Bucharest all the way from Hong Kong — a passionate world traveler, a photographer, and, as it turned out, a man with a serious soft spot for vintage cars. He joined us for our 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿, and from the first minute it was clear he wasn't just looking at Malvina. He was 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 her.

Weeks later, long after the tour ended and he was back home on the other side of the planet, a set of photos landed in our inbox. Malvina, shot with the eye of someone who genuinely loves old metal. No obligation, no reason — just a man who wanted to share what he had seen.

That's the thing about car people. Hong Kong, Bucharest, anywhere — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲. You put a hand on a warm bonnet and everybody understands each other.

In 1980s Romania, every Dacia owner had a deeply personal relationship with their car — the kind where repairs happened on nearly every trip, and often mid-trip. This bond was so universal that even the official Car Magazines rolled up their sleeves and offered roadside first-aid tips. Like this gem:

This year school starts September 7. Back in the socialist days, it was the 15th. But some things never change — the parental panic of getting your kid to show up presentable on day one.

Feast your eyes on this glorious 1976 ad for school uniforms. And here's the best part: it's an ad that admits its own product is a nightmare to buy.

Read the fine print from 1976. “𝗕𝘂𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀.” That's not a sales pitch — that's a warning. The state's own advertising is basically saying: comrades, please, spare yourselves the stampede.

Because everyone knew what “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭” meant. Queues out the door. Elbows flying. Grown adults wrestling over the last shirt in the right size. Herringbone check blouses, pleated skirts for the Pioneer girls, "doc" fabric shorts for the boys — all available, in theory, from the specialized counters of state commerce. In practice? May the odds be ever in your favor.

The slogan at the bottom says it all: “𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪! 𝗕𝘂𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬.” Translation: we both know the shelves won't look like this next week.

In the gloriously well-organized “𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆” — as the Father of the Nation liked to call it — buying a school shirt was a competitive sport. 🥇
Funny thing is, the back-to-school chaos survived communism just fine. Different shops, same panic.

The people's car had a people problem: nobody could afford it.

By 1974 there were 𝟔,𝟎𝟎𝟎 unsold Dacia 1300s stacking up at the Colibași factory. The price? 𝟕𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐥𝐞𝐢 — nearly three years of an average salary. The socialist dream car was gathering dust.

So the Communist Party did something very un-communist. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧.

The transcript of that meeting survives, and it's a strange read. Ceaușescu himself works out the terms out loud:

▪️ "First of all, let's drop the term 'employees.' Let them pay 30% up front… and let's give to everyone. Not everyone is here. We've left out the writers, the lawyers, and even the priest. Maybe the priest wants a car too."

A one-party state, run on quotas and five-year plans, discovering consumer credit to clear a warehouse. 𝐁𝐮𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 — 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞-𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞.

The Dacia was sold as freedom on four wheels. And for a whole generation, it was. It's also a rolling artifact of Cold War economics — shortages, stockpiles, and a Politburo debating whether the priest deserves a set of keys.

Craiova, 1969. Some genius copywriter gave the socialist co-op restaurants of Dolj county pure Mad Men energy. Parasols, white-jacketed waiters, a cold one in the shade — Romania selling itself the modern Western summer. 🕶️
Fast forward to the 80s: same terraces, now empty.
Ceaușescu's debt obsession emptied the shelves, and the lights went out at 10 PM to save power. 🕙
The décor never made it onto the bill.
Eventually, neither did the food.
