Listening, Learning, Transforming: Inside Our Board’s Field Experience

On 7th–8th May, BRAC Rwanda Microfinance Company PLC hosted its Board of Directors, led by Board Chair Shameran Abed, in a two-day visit centered on clients, frontline engagement, and strategic reflection.
The visit began in Rugendabari (Muhanga) with Microfinance Savings Groups, where young women who transitioned from AIM (Rugendabari Branch) to Muhanga Microfinance shared their inspiring journey of savings and financial empowerment. Their discipline and progress clearly demonstrated early signs of impact of financial inclusion at community level.

In Kabgayi, the Board engaged Regional and Branch Managers, alongside the UPGI Provincial Coordinator, in discussions on strengthening collaboration between AIM, MF, and UPGI teams. The country leadership team, including the Country Director (Alex), Chief Executive Officer (Upoma), and UPGI Director (Jean Claude), was well represented. Frontline supervisors and team leaders emphasized that joint planning and coordination under a “One BRAC” approach remain key drivers of stronger impact. The Board, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting staff and enhancing field operations.

On the second day, the Board reviewed Quarter 1 performance, aligned on priorities for the current quarter, and reflected on early strategic direction toward 2027–2030.

Overall, the visit reinforced a shared message: strong impact is built through close connection between clients, frontline teams, and leadership.

Together, we remain committed to advancing financial inclusion, empowering women, and strengthening communities across Rwanda.

Expanding Financial Inclusion and Women’s Empowerment: BRAC Rwanda Microfinance Q1 2026 Performance Highlights

In Quarter 1 of 2026, BRAC Rwanda Microfinance Company PLC continued to grow alongside its clients, expanding access to inclusive financial services across 34 branches. The institution served 43,316 borrowers and 55,791 savers, with women representing 98.9% of all clients.

During the period, RWF 6.67 billion was disbursed in loans, enabling clients to invest, expand, and strengthen their businesses. These results reflect BRAC Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to growing with its clients and supporting sustainable livelihoods at the community level.

Farewell to a Valued Colleague: Mahmudul Hassan

Today we bid farewell to Mahmudul Hassan, who has been with BRAC Rwanda Microfinance Company Plc since 2019. Starting as a Regional Accountant, he rose to Business Support Manager at the Country Head Office through dedication and excellence.

He was a key pillar for Finance and Operations teams, known for bridging operations, finance, and IT to deliver practical, client-focused solutions.

Colleagues gathered to celebrate his contributions and wish him well in his next chapter. Thank you, Hasan—you will be greatly missed.

On April 10th, BRAC Rwanda joined the nation in marking Kwibuka 32 at the Ntarama Genocide Memorial, where more than 5,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest. 🕯️

In quiet reflection, our teams from Microfinance, NGO, and UPGI stood together to honour the lives lost. Walking through the memorial, laying wreaths, and lighting candles, we were reminded of the pain carried by this history—and the responsibility to remember with dignity and respect. Through reflections shared by Dr. Eric Ndushabandi and Olivier Karasira, we deepened our understanding of the past and the enduring importance of remembrance.

We also stood in solidarity with a survivor rebuilding her life—a powerful reminder that memory lives not only in the past, but in the lives that continue today.
