It is somewhat uncommon for lions to actually climb trees. There are no more than 2 populations in the whole world of such lions that do actually climb trees as one of their day after day behavior. One of these populations is found within the Ishasha sector which is found in the south part of well known Queen Elizabeth National Park within Uganda. The other population is found in Lake Manyara National Park in the southern part of Tanzania.

Batwa ''pygmies'' are one of the oldest peoples in Africa. They roamed the forests looking for fruits and honey, and hunted with bows and trained dogs.As the woods were cut down by the Bantu,Batwa numbers dwindled. In 1992 they were evicted from the national parks with no compensation. Recently the authorities have shown more understanding and some progress has been made. Please be cautious when offered to see the pygmies and avoid exploitations of the Batwa. There are three recommended activities that resemble each other and show their history in the forest, involving costumes and drama, Batwa Experience at Buhoma, Buniga forest walk at Nkuringo and the Batwa trail in Mgahinga. A different approach is offered through Batwa in Echuya forest
