A forecast only matters if it's accurate enough to act on and if it reaches the person deciding when to plant.
That chain breaks early when weather station networks are sparse, computing capacity is limited, and climate data is fragmented across systems, making it hard to produce the localised, timely information that farmers, planners, and emergency responders need.
Tomorrow at the Africa Food Systems Forum, the Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Environment and Meteo Rwanda, and UNDP are convening a session on what AI and machine learning could change about weather forecasting and early warning systems.
The discussion will cover Rwanda's work to modernise weather observation, findings from a feasibility study on integrating AI and ML into forecasting and climate services, and the partnerships and investment required to scale this across the continent.

Call for Applications: timbuktoo LaunchPad for HealthTech Startups
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through its timbuktoo initiative and the timbuktoo HealthTech Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, is inviting Africa's most promising health technology startups to apply for its timbuktoo LaunchPad.
If you are building solutions that transform healthcare across the continent, this is your opportunity to be incubated, mentored, and connected to a continent-wide network of partners, experts, and investors.
This call is open Pan-African-wide: HealthTech startups from anywhere in Africa are welcome to apply, whether or not an accredited incubator is yet based in their own country.
We are looking for startups working in:
• Telemedicine and digital health
• AI for healthcare and health data
• Medical devices and diagnostics
• Biotechnology
• Nutrition and wellness technology
• Health supply chain and logistics
Selected startups receive structured incubation through an accredited incubator, mentorship, access to the SIGMA digital platform, investment readiness support, and entry into the timbuktoo LaunchPad network.
Applications are open on a rolling basis. The Cohort 1 window has closed; new applications are now being considered for Cohort 2, starting December 2026.

Conservation funding usually leans on two sources: donor financing and budget allocation.
Rwanda is building a third channel, environmental fines, collected digitally and routed straight to the Rwanda Green Fund.
Through IremboPay, inspectors issue fines on the spot. Every fine carries an invoice number and transaction ID, and Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) tracks payment status in real time on a live dashboard. Revenues are reinvested in reforestation, wetland restoration and environmental education.
Modest in scale, precise in principle: the cost of environmental damage paying toward its repair.

Green finance should not remain in policy rooms. It must reach the institutions closest to communities.
At a Rwanda Green Taxonomy training organized by UNDP, the and the Embassy of Japan, SACCO Managing Directors explored how to support green investments that strengthen livelihoods, from climate-smart agriculture to renewable energy and efficient water management.
Because when SACCOs are equipped to finance green solutions, communities are better positioned to build resilience, grow incomes and contribute to Rwanda’s climate ambitions.
