Evangelizing the cities of Africa through Word and deed in partnership with the church.

African Enterprise Rwanda is part of the larger organization; African Enterprise (AE). AE is presently operating in 10 African countries; South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to these African countries, AE is presently operating in numerous countries throughout North America, Europe and in other regions. Although the organization’s teams reside in the named countries, their evangelistic activities and operations cover the entire continent of Africa and beyond. African Enterprise is a Christian, international, in*******al, interdenominational and non-political organization. Its mission is to “evangelize the cities of Africa through word and deed in partnership with the church”. This vision originated in 1962 when Dr. Michael Cassidy was inspired to start an organization to reach the different cities of Africa with the message of the Gospel. AE Rwanda was established in 1984, with the work best being characterized in two phases, the pre-genocide (1984-1994) period and the post-genocide (1994-present) period. AEE Rwanda responded to the post-genocide phase by revamping existing programs and establishing different programs whilst staying in line with AE’s “word and deed” mission. Since the establishment of AEE Rwanda more than 20 years ago, the organization has changed the lives of thousands of Rwandans while spreading the love of Christ through this great nation.

Everyone has one. The teacher who noticed something. Who stayed back. Who lent you a book, or told you that you were good at something before you believed it.

Most of them never find out.

Name yours in the comments — and if they're still reachable, tell them. It takes a minute and it lands for years.

We're spending September on literacy and education, and none of it works without the people standing at the front of the room.

We don't only teach the children. One of the quieter parts of AEE Rwanda's education work is adult literacy — for parents.

The reasoning is simple. A child's education doesn't happen in a classroom for six hours and then stop. It happens at a kitchen table, in whether someone at home can help with homework, read a school notice, or follow what's on a report card.

So alongside uniforms, school materials and student sponsorship, we work with families directly: adult literacy for parents, support to increase household income, and help with nutrition — because a hungry child doesn't learn either.

Educate a child and you change a life. Educate the household around them and it holds.

Imagine learning to read, and then finding nothing to read.

That's closer to the reality than most people expect. In Rwanda one of the biggest barriers to literacy isn't classrooms or teachers — it's supply. There isn't enough published material in Kinyarwanda, the language most people actually think in.

So we build local libraries, stock them properly, and train community members to run them — so the library belongs to the village, not to us.

Today is International Literacy Day. This is the part that doesn't make the posters.

$1 becomes $20.

Our Early Childhood Centres are co-funded with international government donors. We raise 5% — that unlocks the other 95%. We can't draw down the nineteen until we've raised the one.

Those centres give rural parents a third option: somewhere safe, play-based and properly fed for their three- to five-year-olds, so they can go out and earn without leaving a child home alone or carrying them into the fields.

Tomorrow is International Day of Charity. If you were ever going to give, this is the ratio to give against.

*Gifts over $2 are tax deductible in the USA and Australia, and over $5 in New Zealand. UK donors may be eligible for Gift Aid. In the Netherlands, our governance partner Global Development Group is ANBI-registered.

Beatrice is a young mother in rural Rwanda. Reliable employment in her area is scarce — so when an AEE Rwanda reforestation project opened a tree nursery near her community, it didn't just plant seeds in the ground.

It planted possibilities.

She now manages a nursery bed — steady work, income, dignity — while helping restore a landscape that will sustain her family for years to come.

She is learning to read her own name.

Later it's a health notice. A rental agreement. A vaccination card. A ballot paper.

That's what literacy actually buys.

September at AEE Rwanda is our month of literacy.

832 students. 321 sponsored places. One theme running through this month: young Rwandans given the chance to build a different future, when someone chooses to make room for them.

That's what “Youth in Rwanda” has meant to us this August — and it's the same commitment behind everything in our latest Annual Report.

Behind every young person reaching for their goals is someone who encouraged them along the way — a parent, teacher, mentor, friend, or community member.

Who inspired or encouraged you to become the person you are today? Tag them or share your story in the comments.
