이더리움, 23일 美 현물 ETF 승인 결정… "알트코인 시장 전체 영향"

미국 증권거위원회(SEC)의 현물 ETF(상장지수펀드) 승인을 앞둔 이더리움이 400만원대에서 횡보하고 있다.

14일 국내 가상화폐거래소 업비트에 따르면 지난 13일 오후 4시 기준 이더리움은 24시간 전 대비 3만4000원(0.82%) 내린 409만1000원에 거래됐다. 해외보다 국내에서 더 비싸게 거래되는 것을 뜻하는 김치프리미엄은 2.5%를 기록했다.

이날 이더리움은 오전 9시쯤 장 중 최고 414만4000원을 터치했다. 그러나 이후 하락세를 보이며 오후 2시30분쯤에는 장중 최저 400만3000원까지 떨어졌다.

최근 가상화폐 시장이 주춤하며 이더리움도 하락세를 보이고 있다. 이더리움은 최근 일주일 동안 5.13% 떨어졌다. 최근 한 달 동안은 10.57% 하락했다.

같은 시각 이더리움의 시가총액은 474조원을 기록했다. 시가총액 1648조6000억원인 비트코인의 뒤를 이어 가상화폐 시가총액 2위에 올라있다.

SEC는 오는 23일(현지시간) 아크인베스트-21쉐어스의 이더리움 현물 ETF 최종 승인 결정 기한을 앞두고 있다. 다만 시장에서는 이더리움 현물 ETF의 승인 가능성이 낮다고 보고 있다.

에릭 발추나스 블룸버그 애널리스트는 "SEC는 이더리움 현물 ETF에 대한 승인을 거부할 것"이라며 "이는 곧 이더리움 현물 ETF가 내년 말까지는 빛을 보지 못하리라는 것을 의미한다"고 밝혔다.

그는 미국 대선도 이더리움 현물 ETF에 영향을 줄 것이라는 전망을 내놨다. 에릭 발추나스는 "만약 도널드 트럼프가 미국 대통령의 자리에 오르면 SEC 위원장이 교체될 가능성이 있다"며 "이 경우 발행사는 현물 ETF 승인 신청서를 새롭게 제출해야 한다"고 설명했다.

이더리움 현물 ETF 승인이 불발되면 이더리움을 비롯한 알트코인 시장 전체에 침체를 가져올 것이라는 우려도 나온다. 장경필 쟁글 리서치센터장은 "알트코인 대부분이 이더리움에서 파생된 형태의 프로젝트"라며 "이더리움 현물 ETF 승인 불확실성이 알트코인의 제한적인 상승에 영향을 주고 있다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "알트코인의 경우 비트코인과 달리 규제에 더욱 취약한 상황"이라며 "비트코인은 현물 ETF를 통해 어느 정도 금융자산으로서의 입지를 인정받았다면 알트코인은 이더리움 현물 ETF 출시가 연기되면서 이에 대한 평가도 지연돼 수혜를 입지 못하고 있다"고 전했다.
