Our Professor Jens Schouenborg was invited to participate as a speaker at Smer’s symposium “Bioethics in a Time of Global Crises and Scientific Breakthroughs” in Stockholm earlier this October, where he presented on emerging neurotechnologies for treatment-resistant brain disorders. Together with a number of international experts, the event offered a rich program of lectures, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions—focusing on bioethics at the intersection of global crises and rapid scientific advances.

Neuronano is excited to share that our new colleague Hari Subramanian will attend the 26th Congress of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN) at the Budapest Congress Center, 24–27 September 2025.

We’re looking forward to connecting with clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders across stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, including neuromodulation and DBS.

At Neuronano, our experienced histologists, Dr Lina Pettersson and Dr Lina Gällentoft, are driving research in neurotechnology forward. Their work focuses on studies of how the brain responds to advanced implants, helping to optimize materials and methodologies to minimize inflammation while maximizing implant functionality.

Their expertise enables the development of next-generation brain implants to treat Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. Their research enhances our understanding of how brain tissue responds and paves the way for the future of precision medicine and personalized treatments.

Histologists' work has been fundamental to many medical breakthroughs, and at Neuronano, they are actively shaping the future of neuroscience.

On May 8, we’re participating in Neuroscience Day – an inspiring event where researchers exploring the mysteries of the brain come together to share new ideas! 💡

Organized by Lund University and the Faculty of Medicine, and supported by the Segerfalk Foundation, the day brings together both experienced and early-career researchers with a shared goal: to understand and improve the lives of those affected by neurological diseases.

A highlight this year? ✨ The keynote lecture by Dr. Andres Lozano from Toronto – a world-renowned neurosurgeon and pioneer in deep brain stimulation (DBS), used to treat conditions such as Parkinson’s, depression, and Alzheimer’s.

Brain implant technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, opening up a world of possibilities. But what can next-generation implants truly offer? Here are some potential applications:

18/02/2025

For individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, advanced neurotechnology presents a future with groundbreaking treatment possibilities. But what does "virtually unlimited therapeutic potential" truly mean?

🔹 Precision Treatment – Emerging brain implants and neurostimulation technologies can tailor therapies in real-time, effectively reducing symptoms such as tremors and stiffness.

🔹 Extended Disease Management – Modern therapies have the potential to slow disease progression and enhance quality of life over a longer period.

🔹 Personalized Medicine – Neurotechnology enable customized treatment solutions that optimize care for each individual patient.

🔹 Reduced Side Effects – With more precise and adaptive therapies, patients may rely less on medication, thereby avoiding many of the side effects associated with traditional drugs.

Technological advancements are paving the way for a future where Parkinson’s disease becomes increasingly manageable. The question is no longer if but when we will see a revolution in neurological care.

Conventional technology in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) utilizes leads with an approximate diameter of 1.3 mm. This is 10-100 times the size of a typical brain cell, affecting a significant amount of tissue during implantation. Neuronano’s solution is to use microelectrodes, with a similar diameter as the typical neuron, which enables a smooth implantation with minimal damage to the tissue to be stimulated.

How do we get adequate stimulation at the correct spot, you may ask?

By using a cluster of microelectrodes spread in the target area, we can select the microelectrode(s) closest to the optimal position for maximal symptom relief.
