In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays and forever changed our ability to see beyond the visible. His famous image of Anna Bertha Röntgen's hand—showing bones, flesh, and a wedding ring—became one of the most iconic scientific images in history.
At the time, the technology captured the public imagination. People eagerly volunteered to have their hands X-rayed, often holding perfectly still for extended periods to obtain a clear image.
Fortunately, imaging technology has come a long way since then.
With modern Flash X-Ray (FXR) systems, exposures can be as short as a few nanoseconds, making it possible to capture sharp images of events moving at thousands of meters per second. While we certainly don't recommend X-raying your hand for fun, an FXR system could capture a crisp image before you even had time to stop moving unless you're a superhero running at 10 km/s, then the motion blur during a 20 ns exposure would be only about 0.2 mm.
More than 130 years after Röntgen's discovery, Flash X-Ray technology continues the tradition of revealing the invisible—but now with the speed and precision needed to study impact events, fragmentation, high-velocity projectiles, and other phenomena that occur in millionths of a second.
