Discover Labyrinths with Lars Howlett - designer and builder of sacred spaces for walking meditation, workshop leader and installation artist/photographer.
Lars Howlett (http://www.DiscoverLabyrinths.com) builds, walks, and photographs labyrinths as a practice in mindfulness. He is a Veriditas Certified Labyrinth Facilitator having trained with Lauren Artress at Grace and Chartres Cathedrals. He is an apprentice to master builder Robert Ferre, working and collaborating in creating labyrinths for churches, universities, health centers, retreats, and private residences. In 2011 he traveled to France, Scotland, and Sweden to study the history and spiritual resonance of sacred labyrinth sites. Lars published “Steps Along an Unfolding Path” (http://www.blurb.com/user/findlars) a book of photographs and footpaths he created over six years. He has been an invited speaker and workshop leader at high schools, yoga studios, art galleries, and at Grace Cathedral, as well as the 2011 and 2012 national conferences of the Labyrinth Society. He specializes in the design and installation of outdoor labyrinths, leading workshops and meditative walks in the San Francisco Bay area and beyond. Email [email protected]

Beginning a two day journey through sacred space and time at Mountain Light Retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Mary Ann Wamhoff leads our exploration today of Enhancing Walks with Field Awareness and tomorrow I present on the Embracing the Eternal. In between we will create handheld labyrinths and behold the Cosmic Spiral Walk.
I first discovered this in the collection of the Gotland Museum and was delighted to find it on a European online auction website to acquire a copy for myself. The labyrinth board game is over 100 years old, has a beautiful box and poetically informative journey through the landmarks of Visby, Sweden. My research uncovered two more Swedish labyrinth games reflecting other metaphors and approaches! I played it with my daughter and we enjoyed it very much. She won!

Alas, despite my high hopes and your incredible support I did not win a Swedish Island. Thanks for your enthusiasm for my contest entry— the good news is I’ll be on Gotland leading a labyrinth retreat this summer! And if you’d like to join me next year save the dates for June 20-27 and hopefully we can share the journey in 2027!
I painted an aligned 7-Circuit Chartres Essence on a church patio near Sacramento. Discover hidden design elements and how I reflected the sacred geometry of the original labyrinth in this smaller variation.
I created this labyrinth for Providence Park in Little Rock, Arkansas at the invitation of Gael Hees with funding from My Community Partnership - PCE. The labyrinth will be part of the support for residents who were once chronically homeless. I adapted the Baltic Wheel labyrinth adding more turns and a green foliage background to reflect the Tree of Life. It was installed in the last week of April 2026 and dedicated on World Labyrinth Day.
