When your child says, “I don’t know how to do this,” what’s your first instinct? 👀

For many of us, it’s to sit beside them and show them exFor many of us, it’s to sit beside them and show them exactly what to do.

But sometimes, the best help isn’t the answer.

A simple “Look back at the example” or “What could you try next?” can give children the space to think, try and work it out themselves.

That’s also why Kumon worksheets progress in small steps—so children can use what they already know to take the next step with gradually less help.

Because the goal isn’t for our children to always have someone beside them.

How does a child progress from reading stories to expressing ideas of their own? 📖✍️

The imaginative story we shared in our previous post began with a child’s idea. But putting that idea into words draws on language skills developed long before.

Through the Kumon English curriculum, children progress step by step—from listening and recognising familiar language to reading sentences, understanding paragraphs, summarising information and interpreting complex texts.

So where did the words and ideas come from?

From the stories she had been reading, the vocabulary she had gathered and the way she was beginning to understand how events and ideas connect.
