Chasing the dream, or chasing academic success?

Growing up, many of us probably heard this:

“When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.”
“I want to be a lawyer.”
“I want to earn lots of money.”
“I want to be famous.”

But as I grow older—and after spending so many years teaching—I realise that perhaps the more important question is:

What do you actually want in life?

I see students today who are incredibly busy.

School. Homework. Tuition. Piano. Dance. Football. CCA. Competitions. Examinations.

Some of them almost seem to have a second career besides being a student!

And sometimes they walk into tuition completely exhausted. You can see it on their faces. They are physically in class, but mentally they are probably thinking:

“Why am I doing all this? I just want to sleep and go home.”

It makes me wonder whether we sometimes become so focused on preparing our children for a “successful future” that we forget to help them discover what kind of future they actually want.

This is something I can relate to personally too.

I didn't enter the tuition industry because I had no other career options. I chose this path because I wanted to build something of my own—something I believed in, something where I could make my own decisions and hopefully make a difference to the students who come my way.

It wasn't necessarily the safest choice.

But it was my choice.

With examinations around the corner, many students are now working extremely hard for their results.

And yes, grades matter. Study hard. Prepare properly. Give your examinations your very best.

But remember:

Examinations are a milestone. They are not the destination.

There is a much longer journey waiting for you after that examination hall.

So perhaps, besides asking our children:

“What grade did you get?”

We should occasionally ask them:

“What do you hope to do with your life?”

And when they eventually discover something they truly believe in, give them the courage to pursue it wholeheartedly.

Different children will choose different paths.

Not every path needs to look the same to be successful. ❤️

Looking back at where we started in 2016, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come.

From a simple classroom with a table, a few chairs and a small group of students… to our 5th outlet today.

The environment has changed.
The facilities have improved.
Our team and community have grown.

But one thing has remained unchanged — **our dedication to our students and their education.**

After weeks of planning, renovation and preparation, we are excited to finally welcome students to our **new MathSci Synergy Hougang Centre!** ❤️

We wanted the journey into our centre to feel different — warm, welcoming and unmistakably MathSci Synergy.

From the illuminated entrance to our newly refreshed wood-themed staircase, learning displays and digital information screen, every part of the space has been put together with our students in mind.

But ultimately, a tuition centre isn't about how beautiful the place looks.

It's about **what happens inside it.**

A place where students can ask questions without being afraid of making mistakes.
A place where Mathematics and Science are understood, rather than memorised.
And a place where we help students gradually build the confidence to say:

**“Actually… I can do this.”**

Does Science only happen in school?

Does tuition always have to be about doing practice paper after practice paper?

Ever since I transitioned into tuition teaching, I have believed that Science is best learnt when students can see it happening in real life.

We learn about waves and superposition — but how often do students actually get to see how multiple waves interact?

We learn about rusting in Chemistry — but how often do students observe for themselves how different conditions can accelerate or slow down the process?

We answer PSLE questions about the water cycle — but how many students have actually watched these processes happen in front of them?

Sometimes, we become so focused on answering the question correctly that we forget the Science behind the question.

That is something I hope to change.

Coming in Q4 2026, our new MathSci Synergy Experiential Learning Centre at Chin Swee Road will be a space where students don't just learn Science from worksheets.

They will see it. Experiment with it. Question it. Understand it.

And once they truly understand what is happening, I believe they will be in a much better position to explain it confidently on paper.

Because ultimately, our aim is not simply to teach students how to answer the question.

It is to help them understand why the answer makes sense.
