The Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP FAMNIT) is a member of the University of Primorska, and was founded in 2006. Prof.
Fakulteta za matematiko, naravoslovje in informacijske tehnologije (UP FAMNIT) je članica Univerze na Primorskem. / The Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP FAMNIT) is a member of the University of Primorska. The Faculty offers courses for all three levels of higher education and conducts research in the fields of mathematics, computer science and information technology, and in the natural sciences. The Faculty works closely with the University of Primorska, Andrej Marušič Institute (UP IAM), where most of the academic staff of UP FAMNIT are currently conducting research activities. The undergraduate programmes are all offered on a full-time basis, while the master's programmes are offered both on a full-time and part-time basis. The doctoral programmes are offered only on a part-time basis. All courses are held in Koper. In addition to education, the basic activities of the Faculty include research and library activities, while the Faculty is also the organiser and co-organiser of resounding international conferences and other scientific meetings. The Faculty is actively involved in the international field of higher education and research, and has established a wide network of research links with reputable foreign universities. We like to emphasise that the UP FAMNIT research group is one of the four leading research groups in the field of algebraic graph theory in the world. The other three groups are located in China, Australia and South Korea. These efforts by the Faculty have helped place the University of Primorska as an internationally recognised research institution. The Faculty also holds lectures for the general public (Excursions into the mathematical universe, Biological evenings), summer schools and camps (Math is Cool Summer Camp, Summer School of Mathematical Finance, Natural Science Camp) as well as lectures and workshops, aimed primarily at secondary school and primary school pupils in their final year (Orada - the Computer Science Workshop for secondary school pupils, lectures and workshops in the field of natural science). In September, before the start of the year, we organise workshops for first year students, which we call an Introduction to studying. The Dean, Assoc. Ademir Hujdurović, PhD is the Head of the Faculty, while the Faculty Leadership also consists of the Vice-Deans, the Heads of departments and the Faculty Secretary.

✨ Kick-off meeting of the WISE – From Widening to Urban Sustainability Innovation and Excellence project
Monday, 14 September 2026, marked the kick-off meeting of WISE – From Widening to Urban Sustainability Innovation and Excellence, a four-year project within the Transform4Europe (T4EU) alliance.
The kick-off meeting was held at InnoRenew CoE, UP IAM, in Izola, bringing together project partners to officially launch an initiative that will run from September 2026 until August 2030.
WISE strives to create an ecosystem of excellence-driven and well-connected institutions, fostering collaboration, equality, inclusiveness and continuous improvement across the European research and higher-education landscape.

🌿 DOGODEK OB EVROPSKEM DNEVU EKOLOŠKEGA KMETIJSTVA NA BONISTRI
23. september je Evropski dan ekološkega kmetijstva, namenjen ozaveščanju o pomenu ekološke pridelave, trajnostnega upravljanja naravnih virov ter povezovanja pridelovalcev, stroke in potrošnikov.
Ob tej priložnosti vas v sredo, 23. septembra 2026, med 10.00 in 13.30 vabimo na Bonistro na strokovno-praktičen dogodek, namenjen vsem, ki jih zanimajo ekološko zeliščarstvo, razvoj zeliščne kmetije in ustvarjanje višje dodane vrednosti iz zelišč.
Dogodek je namenjen obstoječim in bodočim pridelovalcem zelišč, ekološkim kmetijam ter konvencionalnim kmetijam, ki razmišljajo o prehodu v ekološko pridelavo.
V programu bomo predstavili:
• kako ekološko pridelavo zdravilnih in aromatičnih rastlin izvajamo na Bonistri,
• aktivnosti Konzorcija za ekološko kmetijstvo Slovenije in načrtovani kolekcijski nasad rožmarina v sodelovanju z UP Famnit,
• praktično svetovanje glede konkretnih izzivov zeliščnih kmetij – od pridelave in predelave do razvoja izdelkov, trženja in oblikovanja blagovne znamke.
Poseben del dogodka bo namenjen vprašanjem in konkretnim primerom prijavljenih udeležencev, zato bomo vsebino čim bolj prilagodili njihovim dejanskim potrebam.

Dr. Peter Glasnović will present the development and growth of the Herbarium of the University of Primorska, which now contains more than 6,000 specimens of seed plants, ferns and fern allies, mosses, and macroalgae.
He will also highlight the importance of the herbarium collection for botanical research and its inclusion in the international Index Herbariorum in 2024.

🧮 130 LET OD ROJSTVA IVA LAHA
5. septembra mineva 130 let od rojstva slovenskega matematika, statistika, demografa in aktuarja Iva Laha, avtorja svetovno znanih Lahovih števil.
✏️ Ob obletnici bo 4. septembra ob 16. uri v Ljubljani odkrita spominska plošča na Miklošičevi cesti 24, kjer je Lah med obema vojnama deloval in izdajal znanstveno revijo Glasnik Udruženja aktuara Kraljevine Jugoslavije.
Plošča je nastala s podporo Slovenskega aktuarskega društva, Slovenskega društva za diskretno in uporabno matematiko ter Univerze na Primorskem.

🔹 ARIS – ERC Fokus – projekt o občanski znanosti in razvoju statistične pismenosti
Novi projekti predstavljajo pomemben prispevek k raziskovanju, inovacijam, trajnostnemu razvoju ter povezovanju z domačimi in mednarodnimi partnerji.

Summer 2026 brought numerous successful applications by researchers at UP FAMNIT and UP IAM to national and international project calls.
Among the newly acquired projects are:
🔹 T4EU – SEED FUNDING – Building Bridges between People and Nature through Conflict Transformation
🔹 EU4Health – EU-JUMP, focusing on the prevention and control of mosquito-borne diseases
🔹 QuantERA 2025 – SDPCode, focusing on the foundations of quantum codes
🔹 Erasmus+ – DATARIUM, EcoTwin-HED and BAUHAUS4ESG
🔹 Culture Helps Solidarity – The Resilient Theatre, supporting Ukrainian veterans
🔹 European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development – a project focused on preserving the Strunjan artichoke
🔹 ARIS – ERC Focus – a project exploring citizen science and the development of statistical literacy
These projects represent an important contribution to research, innovation, sustainability, and collaboration with national and international partners.
