Step needed by the South Sudan CSOs

Decision-making in the country is still largely shaped by influential individuals rather than formal institutions. As a result, political power in South Sudan remains highly personalised, with systems often reflecting the priorities of individuals instead of established rules and structures.

Governance, not oil, will shape South Sudan’s future Fragility will persist unless public institutions can translate national wealth into tangible gains for citizens.

Update on the initiative of evaluation of the Mundari Cultural festival and development of the National Strategy for Cultural festivals in the Country:

This builds on the ongoing evaluation work and aims to move from fragmented efforts toward a more coordinated national vision, one that strengthens cultural identity, promotes peacebuilding, and supports local economic development.

The process is ongoing through consultations and collaboration, and we will continue to share updates as progress is made.

أوضح أن أحد الحواجز أمام تعزيز الدراسات الإفريقية حول السلام والحكم هو غياب الهيكلة الواضحة في المساهمات البحثية. غالبًا ما تُرفض الطلبات بسبب ضعف الكتابة والحجج وليس بسبب نقص البيانات أو النظرية؛ وبالتالي، بعض الأفكار الجيدة حقًا لا تصل أبدًا إلى التداول الأكاديمي. مستندًا إلى خبرته كمحرر دوريات، شرح أن العديد من المساهمات القوية تُرفض لأن الحجج غير واضحة، والنظرية موجودة ضمنيًا بالفعل، والأدلة غير مرتبطة بالادعاءات. وأكد: "الوضوح ليس حيادية."

The current mediation arrangements and the initial coordination meetings with various armed and political opposition groups are increasingly raising serious concerns that must be addressed without delay.

There are clear signs of poor coordination and inconsistency in the way the process is being managed. What was communicated through official invitations and early assurances has not matched the reality of the meetings held. This contradiction is creating confusion, weakening confidence, and sending negative signals to key political actors.

More importantly, the absence of a clear and structured framework for these early engagements risks turning the process into an uncoordinated and selective exercise. If this continues, it will undermine the credibility of the mediation and may deepen divisions among opposition groups rather than promote unity and constructive dialogue.

The Government of South Sudan should urgently review its coordination mechanisms with the mediator, reassess the approach taken so far, and ensure that all political and armed movements are treated fairly and engaged through consistent procedures.

Each stage of the process must be guided by clear objectives, transparent steps, and measurable outcomes. Without immediate correction, there is a real risk of repeating past failures that weakened previous peace efforts and prolonged political instability.

This is a critical moment. A weak start will compromise the entire process.
