The Empire State Building has been the target of daring climbers for many years. Long before the recent climb by Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, others had already risked their lives to reach the top of one of New York City's most famous landmarks.
One of the most famous climbers was French daredevil Alain Robert, often called the "French Spider-Man."

In 1994, he climbed the Empire State Building using only his bare hands. He did not use ropes or safety equipment. After reaching the top, he was arrested by police. Robert became famous around the world for climbing skyscrapers. Over the years, he also climbed the Willis Tower in Chicago, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and many other tall buildings. Guinness World Records recognizes him for climbing more buildings than anyone else and for the amount of time he has spent in jail because of his climbs.

New York has also seen other famous stunts. In 1974, French high-wire artist Philippe Petit amazed the world by walking on a tightrope stretched between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Although it was a different building, he was also arrested after completing the incredible walk.

Not every climb has broken the law. In 2023, actor Jared Leto became the first person to legally climb part of the Empire State Building. With official permission, he climbed from the 86th-floor observation deck to the 104th floor as part of a promotional event with his brother.

The most recent chapter came this week, on July 1, 2026, when Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus climbed all the way to the top of the building's spire, about 1,454 feet above the ground. They unfurled a banner with a message about peace, and Beerkus proposed to Nikolau near the top. She said yes. After coming down, both were taken into police custody and charged with several offenses, including trespassing and reckless endangerment.
