🌍 Meaningful engagement is at the heart of One Health.

At the 9th World One Health Congress 2026 held in Lisbon, Portugal, Prof. Maxine Whittaker, the Advisor and CSO Representative facilitated the workshop entitled 'Meaningful Engagement of People and Communities in One Health Implementation' co-hosted by the Civil Society Platform for Health Equity and Inclusiveness One Health and Climate Change Network and Universidad de La Salle, Columbia.

The workshop was co-hosted by the Civil Society Platform for Health Equity and Inclusiveness One Health and Climate Change Network and Universidad de La Salle, Colombia, and was developed and co-facilitated by Dr. Serge Morand and Prof. Maxine Whittaker, members of the One Health and Climate Change Network, together with Natalia Cediel, Chris Degeling, Salome Bukachi, Dominique Charron, and Ekhlas Hailat.

Bringing together around 50 participants, workshop provided a space to share experiences and develop case studies reflecting on the critical enablers, barriers and lessons learned for meaningful community engagement, GEDSI, Indigenous Knowledge, and social inclusion across diverse contexts—including remote populations, people experiencing poverty, limited education or literacy, older persons, adolescents, migrants and refugees.

Through group discussions and lived experiences, participants developed six case stories from diverse settings, including East Africa, the Sámi Peoples in Norway, First Nations Peoples in Canada, West Africa, nomadic populations in East Africa, homeless youth in Seattle, USA, and agricultural workers in rural Uganda.

Across these stories, several common themes emerged:
🔹 Good communication and coordination with communities and across teams, from inception through evaluation;
🔹 Building community capacity and providing appropriate support for meaningful engagement;
🔹 Understanding and addressing power dynamics, including within households, communities, and between implementers/researchers and communities;
🔹 Investing time and resources in trust and trustworthiness;
🔹 Adequate, reliable and sustained funding and resources;
🔹 Strengthening the competencies of implementation and research teams in participatory approaches, community engagement, GEDSI, and cultural awareness and safety.

These shared experiences remind us that One Health works best when people and communities are not only engaged, but meaningfully heard, valued, and involved throughout the process.

🦟 The Global Fund Results Report 2026 is out!

The fight against malaria continues to make progress — but the gains are increasingly under pressure. The latest Global Fund report highlights key achievements in malaria prevention as well as the challenges facing malaria programmes today.

Key malaria highlights:
📍282 million malaria cases and 610,000 deaths were estimated globally in 2024.
📍In 2025, countries where the Global Fund invests tested 367 million suspected malaria cases and treated 167 million malaria cases.
📍52.1 million children received the full schedule of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in 2025, while 19.9 million pregnant women received at least three doses of preventive treatment during pregnancy.

⚠️ But these gains remain vulnerable. Funding disruptions, conflict, displacement, climate-related events, supply-chain challenges, and drug and insecticide resistance continue to threaten malaria control and progress.

Ending malaria will require sustained commitment and collective action to ensure that effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment reach the people and communities most in need. 🌏💫

Malaria doesn't stop at border🌏

Across the Greater Mekong Subregion, people regularly move between countries for work, family, trade, and other reasons. These movements connect communities and highlight the importance of ensuring that malaria prevention, diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, and follow-up are accessible and coordinated across borders, particularly for mobile and migrant populations.☘️

Malaria elimination cannot be achieved by countries working in isolation. Strong cross-border collaboration, information sharing, coordinated surveillance, and accessible services are essential to ensure that people on the move are not left behind.

🔽Read this insightful on why borders matter in malaria control.

The spread of malaria doesn’t stop at national borders. 🦟

🌳 Across Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam, mobile and migrant populations move through remote forested border areas every day, often using informal crossings. This mobility can make malaria cases harder to detect, treat and track, and access to healthcare limited.

In our new blog, Malaria Consortium’s Programme Manager in Cambodia, Lieven Vernaeve, provides insights into our Cross-border project. He discusses how it's helping to address these challenges by training local volunteers, delivering mobile malaria services and enabling real-time case reporting between frontline health workers.

By adapting approaches to local contexts and strengthening collaboration across borders, these efforts are helping protect hard-won progress towards malaria elimination across the region.
