Join us for a workshop with Lazy Man Coffee (TH) & Invisible Flock (UK) at their exhibition, “Life and Land”, migrating soon to La Lanta Fine Art!

Sip coffee from Ban Nong Tao and gather insights into sustainable agriculture with Siwakorn Odochao, a Pgak’yau farmer and community leader. Then, spend your afternoon learning how to make your own pinhole cameras and develop your own photographs in a dark room with Invisible Flock.

Listen to insights into “Life and Land (ชีวิตและผืนดิน)” from Victoria Pratt, co-founder of Invisible Flock, and Siwakorn Odochao, a Pgak’yau community leader and founder of Lazy Man Coffee.

“Life and Land (ชีวิตและผืนดิน)” is a collaboration between Invisible Flock and Lazy Man Coffee. Using analogue photography, the project chronicles the relationship between Pgak’yau communities and the land as they contend with the intensifying effects of climate change. 

For generations, Pgak’yau communities have practised rotational farming. They carry out small, controlled burns on upland rice fields before the rainy season begins. This carefully-timed process clears weeds and returns nutrients to the soil. As the rains arrive, charcoal from the burn mixes with the earth, creating a natural fertilizer that supports diverse crops without the need for chemical inputs.

These traditional practices exist within a changing environmental and political landscape. However, many members of the Pgak’yau community feel that their controlled burns within rotational farming systems are often grouped together with the broader causes of air pollution. They argue that rotational farming is a sustainable and affordable practice that supports biodiversity, reduces dependence on pesticides, and helps maintain cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

The first exhibition under Warin Lab Nomad (วารินแล็บ ภาคเร่ร่อน) is well underway.

Thank you esea contemporary of Manchester, UK for hosting “Thailand and the Making of Modernity” a session of film screening and conversation with Nakrob Moonmanas and Alex Ungprateeb Fynn, moderated by esea contemporary Associate Curator Julia Jiang.

The artist Nakrob and the curator Alex reflect on what it means to see across difference, interrogate the limits of historical records, and consider how art can reopen histories that resist closure.

The screening shows a trilogy of short films forming part of multi-disciplinary exhibition “Metamorphosis in Gold: รูปสุวรรณศิวิไลซ์” that was on show at Warin Lab Contemporary.

The last week.

This week marks our final days in the space that has been home to Warin Lab Contemporary.

Over the past years, this space has held so much more than exhibitions. It has been a place for conversations, experimentation, friendships, and collaborations. We’ve had the privilege of working with inspiring artists, curators, researchers, and welcoming visitors from Thailand and around the world. For all of this, I am deeply grateful.

Rather than rushing into another space, I’ve chosen to wait until the right one reveals itself. When that moment comes, Warin Lab Contemporary will return as a destination for exhibitions, learning, and exchange. In the meantime, Warin Lab Nomad will carry our work into new places and new communities.

Join us for this screening and conversation event presented in dialogue with Nakrob Moonmanas’s exhibition ‘รูปสุวรรณศิวิไลซ์: Metamorphosis in Gold,’ curated by Alex Ungprateeb Flynn, at Warin Lab Contemporary Warin Lab Contemporary, Bangkok.

The event will begin with a 20-minute screening of the first three acts of ‘รูปสุวรรณศิวิไลซ์: Metamorphosis in Gold’, a trilogy of short films forming part of the wider multi-disciplinary exhibition. This will be followed by a conversation between the artist Nakrob Moonmanas and the exhibition’s curator Alex Ungprateeb Flynn, moderated by esea contemporary Associate Curator Julia Jiang .

Together, the speakers will explore the questions at the heart of ‘Metamorphosis in Gold’: how histories are constructed, how identities are transformed, and what remains unresolved within projects of ‘civilisation’.
