A cousin of ruby and sapphire in prestige, without the fame. Purple spinel forms in marble hosted deposits, its color ranging from lavender to deep violet, sometimes with a grayish or pinkish undertone.

🔬 RI 1.712 to 1.762 (singly refractive, easy separation from corundum), SG ~3.60 to 3.65. No cleavage, excellent durability for daily wear.

Madagascar has become one of the most significant sources of fine corundum since major deposits were discovered in the 1990s, producing sapphires across nearly the full color range: blue, pink, yellow, padparadscha, and fancy bluish violet.

📍 Key deposits: Ilakaka (the largest, discovered 1998), Andranondambo (older, known for unheated stones), and Antsiranana in the north.

🔬 For the discerning eye: Madagascar corundum typically shows RI 1.762 to 1.770 and birefringence 0.008 to 0.010, consistent with corundum from other classic sources. Inclusion suites vary by deposit, silk (rutile needles), zircon haloes, and negative crystals help distinguish origin alongside trace element analysis (Ga, Fe, Mg via LA-ICP-MS).
