As we gear up for , we’re looking back at one of our pivotal 2025 sessions co-organized with Malaysia’s National Pension Fund (KWAP): "𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽: 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡’𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁."
Capital alone isn't enough. Unlocking ASEAN’s circular economy requires strategic investment partnerships, capacity building, and innovative business models.
Here are the key takeaways from our 2025 panel of impact investors and industry leaders:
💼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹: Investors play a crucial role in providing market access, securing long-term customer agreements, and supplying independent analytics (e.g., GHG reduction metrics) to help circular startups scale.
📈 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: Adopting circular practices—even in non-traditional sectors—boosts long-term enterprise valuation, cuts costs, and secures stable supply chains.
🔄 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀: Models like Product-as-a-Service (PaaS) and reuse frameworks drive dual-user value, but demand high-quality inputs, spare parts supply, and supportive fiscal policies.
📱 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝗽:Digital platforms are vital to eliminate inefficiencies, helping buyers and sellers find each other to capture lost economic value from waste stream materials.

💡 𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗙 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
As we gear up for , let’s look back at the critical takeaways shared by regional pioneers, policy leaders, corporates, and educators from our 2025 highlight session: "Green Skills, Innovative Solutions and Investments – Unlocking the Potential of Circular Startups in ASEAN."
To scale circularity across Southeast Asia, we must bridge the gaps between innovation, human capital, finance, and policy. Here are the 5 core takeaways driving our momentum into 2026:
💡 𝟭. 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲—𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁.Startups like MYCL (mycelium leather) and nornnorn (leasing models) prove waste is an asset. But access to scaling capital remains the #1 bottleneck for ASEAN MSMEs.
🧠 𝟮. 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗚𝗮𝗽. Eco-design, digital tools, and life-cycle thinking are no longer optional. We must align university & TVET training with actual market needs (strategic investments, not compliance costs!).
🤝 𝟯. 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 + 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. From SCG Chemicals working with waste banks to NXPO’s Saraburi Sandbox, scaling circularity requires corporates and governments to bring SMEs into the main value chain.
🛍️ 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝘀𝗵. High costs and low willingness to pay premiums hold back green products. We need regional policy alignment and trade support to level the playing field.
🏛️ 𝟱. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀. Governments must lead the charge—harmonizing EPR rules, opening finance streams, and orchestrating cross-sector collaboration.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗙 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲? Move from dialogue to co-creation. 🌍

Singapore’s recycling model isn't a traditional waste bank with cash payouts. It’s a mandatory system focusing on the infrastructure and management needed to make high-rise recycling work.
🛠️ 𝟰 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀
🔹Legislate Infrastructure: Require recycling bins in all high-rise buildings by law.
🔹Standardize Labels: Use clear visual aids and uniform colors (e.g., blue for recyclables, green for trash) to prevent contamination.
🔹Define Roles: Assign clear responsibilities to property managers, cleaners, and residents.
🔹Optimize Logistics: Set up centralized pickup points within complexes for easy collection.
💡 𝟰 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 & 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀
🔹Track the Data: Require monthly tonnage reports to measure progress.
🔹Prevent Leakage: Enforce strict SOPs so staff don't mix recyclables with general trash.
🔹Stay Flexible: Adapt collection methods (bins, door-to-door, chutes) to match building designs.
🔹Educate Continuously: Keep residents engaged with regular campaigns and visual guides.
📌 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀
🔹Source Segregation: Mandatory sorting of paper, metal, plastic, and glass at home.
🔹Community Ownership: Managed directly by building managers and residents.
🔹Structured Logistics: Sorted materials go directly to formal recycling facilities.
✅Bottom Line: Financial rewards attract people to waste banks, but reliable infrastructure and clear rules keep them running.

If your business exports products to the European Union, or supplies companies that do, a major regulatory shift has officially arrived.
Starting 𝟭𝟮 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗣𝗣𝗪𝗥) applies directly across all 27 EU member states. Replacing the old patchwork of national rules, the PPWR introduces strict, unified standards to reduce packaging waste and accelerate a global circular economy.
Here is what you need to know and how to prepare.
💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟮 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲?
The PPWR governs all packaging placed on the EU market—from consumer primary packaging (like bottles or boxes) to secondary transport packaging (like shipping cartons and polybags).
𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
🚫 PFAS & Heavy Metals Restrictions: Strict limits on toxic "forever chemicals" (PFAS) and heavy metals in food-contact and general packaging.
📋 EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC): Manufacturers and exporters must document compliance before packaging enters the EU market.
♻️ Harmonized Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Standardized EU-wide registration and reporting rules for waste management fees.
📦 Packaging Minimization: Empty space in transport packaging must be minimized to reduce superfluous weight and air shipment volume.
🌏 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀?
Even if your company is based in Southeast Asia, if your product ends up in the EU market, PPWR applies to you.
🔹Supply Chain Accountability: EU importers will require ASEAN suppliers to prove that their packaging materials meet PPWR standards.
🔹Design-for-Recyclability (Looking Ahead): By 2030, all packaging sold in the EU must be recyclable and contain minimum shares of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics.
🔹Competitive Edge: ASEAN producers who adopt circular packaging early will secure stronger partnerships with European buyers looking for compliant partners.
🌿 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆:By designing out waste today, ASEAN businesses can lead the transition toward sustainable global trade.
