The Faculty of Public Policy and Sustainable Development, AIT, convened its second Policy Dialogue of 2026 on “𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚”.

Bringing together academics, policy experts, researchers, students, and practitioners, the dialogue explored how urban infrastructure intersects with governance, disaster resilience, social inequality, citizen participation, and emerging technologies.

Key discussions highlighted the need to:
🔹 Strengthen coordination across institutions and levels of government
🔹 Improve earthquake preparedness and resilient infrastructure
🔹 Integrate equity, accessibility, and marginalized communities into urban planning
🔹 Strengthen local government capacity and long-term infrastructure financing
🔹 Ensure AI and smart-city technologies address real community needs while considering privacy and digital inclusion

The event forms part of the FPSD Policy Dialogue Series, connecting research, policy, and practice to address complex regional challenges.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Delta Electronics Thailand PCL have marked another milestone in their growing industry–academia partnership, with Delta providing full Master’s degree scholarships to two AIT students from the August 2026 intake.

This year’s recipients are Ms. Moe Pyae Pyae Kyaw, studying Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), and Mr. Lwin Moe Aung, studying Digital Technology and Enterprise Information Management (DTEIM), under AIT’s Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology (FAST).

The partnership reflects AIT and Delta’s shared commitment to developing highly skilled, industry-ready talent and strengthening connections between academic learning, research, mentorship, and real-world technological applications.

AIT looks forward to further expanding this collaboration and creating more opportunities for talented students in 2027 and beyond.

AIT, Vital Strategies, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are advancing an 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭-𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 for Bangkok under the Partnership for Healthy Cities, using heat, health, demographic, occupational, and service-access data to identify high-risk communities and guide targeted interventions.

The initiative was highlighted during the 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐤 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, held at AIT on 17 September 2026. The dialogue brought together representatives from BMA, Vital Strategies, AIT, and United Nations ESCAP to explore how scientific evidence, public health information, environmental monitoring, and city planning can be better connected to strengthen Bangkok’s response to extreme heat.

The project will develop heat hotspot maps, a Bangkok Heat Vulnerability Index, and pilot interventions in selected high-risk communities. These efforts will help answer three key questions: Who is most at risk? Where are they located? What support do they need? Proposed measures include targeted heat warnings, improved access to cooling spaces and drinking water, stronger protection for outdoor workers, and enhanced public health preparedness.

Alongside the dialogue, AIT and Vital Strategies also signed an MoU to strengthen broader cooperation on climate, environment, urban development, sustainability, and public health across the Asia-Pacific region.

𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝: 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐤𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢–𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐥𝐢 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥
Following the devastating Bhotekoshi–Trishuli disaster of 26 August 2026, a team of AIT students and researchers led by Prof. Sangam Shrestha worked to better understand what happened, examine the cascading processes behind the disaster, and identify lessons that could help reduce the risks of similar events in the future.

Drawing on climate and hydrological data, satellite and remote-sensing observations, and numerical modelling, the team has released a new report, “Beyond a Flash Flood: The Bhotekoshi–Trishuli Disaster in Nepal—Preliminary Insights, Lessons Learned & The Way Forward.” The preliminary reconstruction points to a massive high-mountain rock-ice avalanche and landslide as the primary trigger of the catastrophic downstream flash flood.

The findings highlight an urgent need to strengthen multi-hazard monitoring and early warning, cross-border data sharing, remote sensing, and risk-informed infrastructure planning across the Himalayan region.
The report is dedicated to those who lost their lives, those who remain missing, and the families and communities affected by this tragedy.

🌍 AIT and Nigeria Explore Collaboration on Climate-Smart Agriculture, Aquaculture and Food Security

AIT and Nigeria are exploring stronger collaboration in climate-smart agriculture, aquaculture, food security, capacity development, and technology transfer, with a focus on turning research and technical expertise into practical solutions for farmers and local communities.

During a courtesy call on 𝐇.𝐄. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐣𝐢-𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐫𝐮, 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, on 10 September 2026, AIT President Prof. Pai-Chi Li and the delegation discussed challenges including post-harvest losses, limited access to appropriate technologies, and the need to strengthen technical capacity among small-scale farmers and fish farmers.

The discussion also highlighted AIT’s ongoing aquaculture work in Nigeria, including a Gates Foundation-supported initiative, and explored opportunities to strengthen links among research institutions, development partners, and local communities. The Ambassador also invited AIT to consider establishing a presence in Nigeria to further deepen institutional cooperation.

The engagement reflects AIT’s growing commitment to South–South cooperation through education, research, innovation, and capacity development, while expanding partnerships between Asia and Africa.
