Heute ist International Marine Fish Day! 🌊🐟
Unsere Ozeane gehören zu den am wenigsten erforschten Lebensräumen der Erde – und auch über viele Meeresfische wissen wir noch erstaunlich wenig.
Ein großes Rätsel ist ihre Fortpflanzung: Die meisten Meeresfische geben ihre Eier einfach ins Wasser ab. Wie genau diese Laichereignisse ablaufen und welche Bedingungen dafür notwendig sind, wird derzeit von vielen Europäischen Aquarien erforscht. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse helfen dabei, Meeresfische besser zu verstehen und langfristig auch ihre Bestände in der Natur zu schützen. 💙
Ein großartiges Beispiel dafür ist unser Partner RoffaReefs – eine Naturschutzorganisation, die im Aquarium des Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam gegründet wurde. Dort wurden Methoden entwickelt und erprobt, die heute bei der Wiederherstellung von Korallenriffen auf Bonaire zum Einsatz kommen. 🪸
Forschung in Aquarien kann somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Schutz unserer Meere leisten. 🌍

🎓Conservation Education| 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲! 🐟
Did you know that 75% of all marine fish release their eggs straight into the open ocean? It's called 𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, and despite how common it is, we still know surprisingly little about it.🤔
This year, the EAZA Marine Teleost Taxon Advisory Group is raising awareness of pelagic spawner breeding through the Fish of the Year campaign, showing how aquariums and field partners work together to fill the knowledge gaps 💡 on this topic.
One key effort is the Eggspedition.org platform (RoffaReefs) ,dedicated to recognising🔍, documenting and understanding fish eggs.

The platform brings together images of fish eggs, roe and spawning behavior to gain a better understanding of reproduction within fish populations, coral reefs and the health of the oceans.

Today we are taking a unique step toward protecting our oceans and coral reefs. RoffaReefs and Blijdorp Zoo are proud to present a global digital platform: eggspedition.org!
With this new platform, co-funded by Wereld Natuur Fonds - WWF, we're bringing together images of fish eggs, roe, and spawning behaviour from around the world to accurately monitor fish populations and the health our oceans.
Coral reefs worldwide have been under severe pressure for years due to overfishing, among other factors. Yet healthy coral is entirely dependent on the fish that sustain the reef. To effectively protect fish populations, data is crucial. And thanks to Eggspedition.org, everyone can help starting now!
Whether you're a professional scientist, a passionate recreational diver(did you follow the padi course of Dive Friends Bonaire already?), a local fisherman (or a fisheries cooperation like Piskabon ), or an ocean lover: everyone can make an active contribution. By adding your own insights and observations, we're working together to build oceans that are once again booming with marine life.
