The Caribbean has lost one of its most celebrated musical voices. Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow, passed away on Sunday, 27 September 2026, at the age of 91.

At Couva Public Library, we join Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean in remembering a true cultural icon whose music will continue to educate, entertain and inspire generations to come.

This International Day of Peace, we are reminded that **peace begins with each of us**—in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of everyday actions that help build peaceful communities. From showing kindness and respect to listening to others, resolving disagreements through dialogue, and supporting those around us, each of us can play a part in creating a more peaceful world.

📖 **A Little History**

The International Day of Peace was established by the **United Nations General Assembly in 1981**. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982. In **2001**, the UN unanimously adopted September 21 as the permanent date and designated it as a day of **non-violence and ceasefire**, calling on people around the world to reflect on and strengthen the ideals of peace.

Peace is not simply the absence of conflict—it is built through **understanding, cooperation, respect, compassion and inclusion**.
