The organization’s main aim is to enhance the capacity of women and support their efforts towards their development and health.

Empowering women and youth throughout Uganda to advocate against violence through human rights education and advocacy, skills and information to strengthen capacities and visibility Women Rights Initiative (WORI) is an action oriented women’s organization that was founded in 2007 in Uganda by three young women to respond and arise to the challenges of human and women’s rights, fighting poverty, creating awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, capacity building in leadership and governance at grass root levels. The organization has a special interest in the plight of women and youths as they are most susceptible to psychological, physical, social and economical vulnerability.

Never be ashamed of your work if it is honest, provides for your family and pays the bills. Be proud of it.

To the woman at the market in Busoga before sunrise arranging her tomatoes. To the one running a small restaurant out of her home. To the one selling secondhand clothes, plaiting hair, making chapati by the roadside.

Society may call it a small job. We call it power.

Because every shilling she earns is a shilling that belongs to her. Every sale she makes is a decision she gets to make for herself and her children. Every day she shows up to that market or that stall she is building something that cannot be taken from her.

At WORI we have seen it too many times. Financial dependence is the leading reason women stay in abusive homes. Not weakness. Not love. The inability to leave without losing everything.

So when a woman earns her own income, any income, she is not just running a business. She is building her exit if she ever needs one. She is building her children's safety. She is building her freedom.

No honest work is small. Be proud of it.

They say an organisation is only as good as its leadership. Today we want you to meet ours.

Meet Kigere Rose. To some, she is Auntie Rose. To others, Madam. But to everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside her, the title matters far less than the woman behind it.

Rose does not do this work because it is her job. She does it because it is the right thing to do. Because she looked at the community she grew up in and decided she was going to leave it better than she found it.

Under her leadership, WORI built a private shelter for women fleeing domestic violence. A safe place where women can heal, be skilled, and start again. She then took that vision further and started a social enterprise to ensure that menstruation is never again the reason a girl drops out of school.

Her vision is bigger than what she could carry alone. And to every partner, supporter, wellwisher, and funder who has walked alongside her in this work, thank you.

Aluta continua. The work of Women Rights Initiative continues.

She was never taught. She was just expected to figure it out.

And when she got it wrong we were the first to judge her.

We live in communities where talking about reproductive health is considered shameful. Where a mother cannot say certain words to her daughter. Where a teacher skips the chapter. Where a girl grows up with questions she has never felt safe enough to ask anyone.

And then that same girl gets pregnant before she was ready. Or contracts a reproductive illness she did not know how to prevent. Or in desperation makes a decision that costs her her life.

We act shocked. We ask what happened to her. But the real question is what did we ever teach her.

At WORI we are refusing to let silence be the answer anymore. Our girls deserve accurate information about their bodies. About their health. About their choices.

Not because we are encouraging anything. But because knowledge protects. And a girl who understands her body is a girl who cannot easily be taken advantage of.

She was never taught. Not anymore.

Over a year ago we joined something bigger than ourselves. Today we celebrate what it became.

The ERIUM Project brought together WORI, Act Together, Ensibuuko, Slum Dwellers Federation and Eco Plastile in partnership with Jinja City to change the economic reality of urban communities with women and youth at the centre.

Markets renovated. Loans made accessible. Plastics turned into roofing tiles. Savings built. And throughout all of it women and girls included not as an afterthought but as the foundation.

WORI ensured that gender was never left out of the conversation. That every partner was building toward a Jinja where women and youth are not just present but participating, leading and benefitting.

To our funding partner Cities Alliance, thank you for believing that a local women led organisation belongs in city development. Because we do.

She did not stay because she wanted to.

She stayed because he was the only income and leaving meant her children went hungry.

WORI sheltered her, trained her and connected her to Women on Wheels who gave her an electric bike. Today she earns her own income and makes her own choices.

Economic empowerment is how we end domestic violence.

Changing the world for women should not be left to women alone.

The burden of ending period stigma, educating communities, and fighting for menstrual dignity has for too long rested entirely on the shoulders of women. And that load is heavy. Too heavy to carry alone.

This week, under our Periods to Prosperity Programme in partnership with , we did something we are truly proud of.

We trained a group we call Model Men.

Men who are choosing to understand what women go through during their periods. Men learning how to show up with support instead of shame. Men who will go back into their communities and break the silence and stigma around menstruation from the inside.

Because when men become ambassadors of change, the conversation reaches places it never could before.

The crusade for menstrual dignity just got louder.

We can make accountability without humiliating the people we serve.

We live in an era where organisations and donors need photos and videos to show that the work is happening. We understand that. Accountability matters.

But somewhere along the way accountability became performance. And the people being helped became props in someone else's story.

At WORI we believe the women we serve are not content. They are human beings. And if the purpose of our work is to uplift them then the way we document that work must reflect the same dignity we are trying to restore.

There is a better way to tell this story. And we are committed to finding it every single time.

Women have never had a fair start.

We compete for the same opportunities as men while carrying things they will never have to think about. The monthly period that some organisations use as an excuse to question our reliability. The pregnancy that costs some women their jobs before the baby even arrives.

The breastfeeding that disqualifies her in a room full of people who have never had to make that choice. The home she manages before and after every workday while the clock on her career keeps ticking.

We did not choose these things. They are part of being a woman.

And what we refuse to accept is a society that uses them to limit us.

The race may never be perfectly fair. But no organisation, no employer, no system gets to tell a woman her biology makes her less capable, less hireable, less worthy of the seat at the table.

At WORI we fight for every woman who was turned away not because of what she could not do but because of what she carries while doing it.

She deserves that seat. And we will keep saying so.
