Afrigo Band icon Moses Matovu killed in Kampala attack
Veteran musician and Afrigo Band icon Moses Matovu, 77, died after being attacked by unidentified assailants in Kampala. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital on Thursday morning (September 24, 2026) but succumbed to his injuries.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed he was attacked early Thursday at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division. Preliminary reports indicate he was on his way to a mosque for morning prayers (a routine, according to a friend). A police task team is investigating, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. The motive, number of attackers, and weapon remain unclear at the time of reporting.⁠Monitor

Matovu was a founding member of Afrigo Band (formed in 1975), one of Uganda’s longest-running and most influential live bands. He started in the 1960s with the Thunderbirds Band, then the Police Band and Cranes Band, before co-founding Afrigo after Cranes split. He served as leader, saxophonist, vocalist, and composer for decades. Born June 19, 1949, in Kawempe, Kampala, to Abdallah Bukenya bin Adam and Solome Nakitto, he had a career spanning nearly six decades and helped sustain Uganda’s live-band music tradition.
