Death sentences against women in Sudan’s current war do not constitute justice. They are a profound failure of it.

As highlighted by SIHA Network Regional Director Hala Al-Karib, women who remain in conflict-affected areas often do so because of war, poverty, fear and coercion—not by choice.

Their efforts to secure food, healthcare and safety for their families must not be criminalised. Women are civilians, entitled to protection, dignity and due process.

Sudan’s justice system must not punish women for surviving war. Accountability must be rooted in human rights, gender justice and a survivor-centred approach.

Under our WEAVE project, supported by GIZ, SIHA in Ethiopia brought together 11 women-led organizations and informal women’s collectives to amplify an often overlooked but fundamental issue: the recognition, reduction, and redistribution of unpaid care and domestic work. Through community dialogues, school-based awareness campaigns, policy engagement, and digital advocacy, we elevated conversations on the invisible labor that sustains households, communities, and economies every day.

This campaign is a powerful reminder that meaningful norm change requires collective action. In featuring this conversation in schools, it is clear that engaging young people today is essential in building a future where care responsibilities are valued, shared, and no longer disproportionately shouldered by women and girls.

We extend a special thank you to the Addis Ababa Teachers Association for their instrumental role in opening doors for school-based engagement, Women Can Do It (WCDI) for spearheading the development of the policy brief which grounded the campaign, and Ethiopian Women's Development Organization (EWDO) for their leadership in ensuring the success of the community dialogue that marked the campaign’s culmination.

Turning policy into protection in Afmadow.

Our member Social Women and Resilience Organization (SWRO) is taking Jubaland’s new Anti-FGM Bill directly to women and girls in displacement settlements across Afmadow, Lower Juba.

Through its “Turning Policy Into Protection” campaign, SWRO is equipping communities with knowledge about the new law, the protections it provides for girls, and the 2612 hotline that is available for support.

This is what local and women-led change looks like: turning policy into awareness, action and protection.

We are proud to showcase SWRO’s work and the vital role our members play in driving change in their communities.

During the first Africa Family Law Network (AFLN) annual conference, founding members: Equality Now Femnet Secretariat, Musawah, and SIHA Network used this platform to reaffirm shared commitments towards equality and justice in family laws across the continent.

As anti-rights movements push for restrictive interpretations of family, gender roles, and traditional values, the AFLN calls for stronger regional coordination to protect and advance women’s human rights.

On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we remember the hundreds of Sudanese women and girls who remain missing, caught between warring factions, held in detention centers unknown to their families, or hidden in slavery camps mainly across Darfur, South Kordofan, and the Nuba Mountains.

Today, we should acknowledge the horrific crimes committed against women and girls in : those who have vanished from the lives of their loved ones and those whose memories are erased by shame and stigma.

Breaking Barriers is a project spearheaded by SIHA Network, in partnership with women grassroots organizations in Arua, West Nile, Uganda.

For the next 6 months, we will facilitate the training of a selected group of young women in unconventional gender occupations, such as leather crafting, automotive mechanics, plumbing, carpentry, photography, and videography.

We are privileged to obtain substantial support from communities and the families of these driven young women.

When young women acquire the knowledge, skills, and opportunity to confront gender stereotypes, they can transform their lives and enhance the welfare of their communities.

This consultancy will generate country-specific and regional evidence on violence against women, and analyse the protection environment for Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs).
