*Hon. Kibaba Lodrick Ngangasi Owa Kahangiro: The Fallen Hero from Mbunga*

The passing of Hon. Kibaba Lodrick Ngangasi Owa Kahangiro on 14th June 2026 marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the cultural and historical journey of the mother land. His life was one of unwavering dedication to the preservation of Bakonzo-Bayiira heritage, the promotion of cultural tourism, and the transmission of indigenous knowledge to future generations. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire scholars, cultural practitioners, conservationists, and community leaders. "Omuhimba Ngoma Ahumwire........"

I remember accompanying him to Bughalitsa during the preparations for the *Mbunga Bughalitsa Hiking Tour* in 2019. During that memorable journey, I made him a promise that if he departed before me, I would write about his invaluable contribution to our society. Today, I fulfil that promise with deep respect and gratitude.

Hon. Kibaba was widely recognized as a cultural custodian and a respected expert in education and traditional knowledge from the Bakyira clan. His understanding of the Rwenzori Mountains went beyond geography; he interpreted the landscape as a living archive of history, spirituality, identity, and community memory. Whenever I sought clarity on matters relating to Bakonzo culture or heritage, his wisdom and insights enriched my work. Several of my previous writings benefited greatly from his guidance and thoughtful reflections. He taught me the history behind Kapolyo, Nyamutswa and Tibamwenda of the Bakonzo-Bayiira tribe.

Until his passing, he served as the *Deputy Minister for Culture in the Rwenzururu Kingdom,* where he tirelessly promoted the preservation of cultural values and traditions. His leadership was characterized by humility, integrity, and a deep commitment to safeguarding the customs that define the identity of the people of Rwenzori. He believed that culture was not merely about the past but a foundation upon which future generations could build pride and sustainable development.
His leadership saw the first Ridge Cleansing of the land since 1982.

Beyond the kingdom administration, Hon. Kibaba made remarkable contributions to tourism and education. *As a Director of Rwenzori Action for Tourism Services (RWATS),* he played a pivotal role in developing Mbunga Sub-county as a destination for cultural and eco-tourism. RWATS became more than a tourism facility; it served as a centre where domestic and international visitors could experience the authentic heritage of the Rwenzori people while appreciating the rich natural environment surrounding the mountains.

His passion for education was equally evident through his service as a *Director of Twins Wing College,* where he presided over learning that respected both formal education by skilling Uganda and indigenous knowledge systems of the Bakonzo. He understood that empowering young people required connecting classroom instruction with community history, cultural identity, and practical skills.

Perhaps one of his most enduring contributions was his work as a cultural consultant in the restoration of over 100 cultural and sacred sites across the Rwenzori Mountains. His expertise guided numerous heritage conservation initiatives, ensuring that shrines, historical landscapes, and sacred places retained their authenticity while remaining accessible for cultural education and tourism. His efforts strengthened community ownership of heritage and reinforced the importance of protecting ancestral sites for future generations.

*Hon. Kibaba Lodrick Ngangasi Owa Kahangiro* was more than a leader; he was a bridge between the past and the future. His voice interpreted the mountains, his knowledge preserved traditions, and his service united communities around their shared heritage.
Though he has fallen, the seeds he planted in culture, tourism, education, and conservation will continue to grow.

May his memory remain a guiding light for all who believe that preserving heritage is essential to building a stronger and more dignified society. His legacy lives on in the hills, sacred sites, classrooms, and hearts of the people he faithfully served.
