🌌 Astronomers just detected the most distant blazar ever observed, and its light has been traveling toward us for 8 billion years.
Known as Blazar OP 313, it’s powered by a supermassive black hole feeding on surrounding material and launching jets of plasma at nearly the speed of light. Because one of those jets points almost directly toward Earth, we see an especially intense burst of energy.
The light reaching us today shows the blazar as it existed about 5 billion years after the Big Bang, when stars and galaxies were forming at an extraordinary pace.
🔭 By studying its high-energy gamma rays, researchers can learn more about how supermassive black holes accelerated particles and shaped their surroundings during an earlier chapter of cosmic history.
Eight billion years later, that ancient signal is still teaching us something new about the universe. ✨

A surprise $90 deposit is landing for some Medicare enrollees this week. For roughly 40 million others, nothing is coming.
The payments are going to people in traditional Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive screenings. Medicare Advantage enrollees, people who pay income-related premiums, and those who already receive premium assistance are not eligible. Most deposits arrive through the Social Security Administration, while some beneficiaries will get a paper check later in October labeled “Medicare Improvement Fund Payment.”
📌 The standard Part B premium is $202.90 in 2026 and is expected to reach $209.50 in 2027.
That context matters. Some analysts note the $90 helps but won’t fully offset rising premiums, and healthcare costs remain a top financial concern across age groups.
For now, the payment is a welcome bit of relief. The bigger question is how coverage costs keep pace over time.
Why you just got a $90 Social Security check, and why 40 million seniors didn't Millions of seniors are getting $90 direct deposits from Social Security this week, prompting questions about the source of the money.

⚠️ Money is one of the most consistently cited sources of stress in America.
For caregivers, that weight often increases! 😮
Having a clearer picture of where things stand can help ease some of the uncertainty that makes financial stress feel heaviest in the first place.
There's no clean solution to money stress.
Most of it is caused by the unknown. The uncertainty.
World Mental Health Day recognizes just how deeply finances can impact our well-being (and vice versa).
If financial stress has been sitting in the background of your life this year, a conversation with a professional can go a long way, be it a mental health professional or a financial professional. Pursuing comfort, understanding, and compassion is a team sport.

🎨 Some of the art world's most extraordinary paintings are about to return to the public eye after nearly half a century.
On November 18, Sotheby's will auction 12 Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks in New York. The collection, assembled by Argentine collectors Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and Carlos Pedro Blaquier, is valued at approximately $450 million.
Among the highlights:
🌳 Vincent van Gogh's Chestnut Trees in Flower: Estimated at $180 million, the landscape was painted in 1890, shortly after the artist left a psychiatric asylum.
🖼️ Paul Cézanne's Arlequin: Estimated at $120 million, the portrait depicts the artist's son dressed as a harlequin.
🖌️ Works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Pissarro: The collection also includes Parisian cityscapes, a horse-racing scene, and a boating scene.
The collection has been largely unseen for about half a century, making this a rare look at works that have spent decades in private hands.
With Sotheby's anticipating international interest, the November auction could also set new records for the artists.

September brought a rebound in private sector hiring, with employers adding 90,000 jobs, according to ADP. That's more than the 68,000 economists expected and well above August's revised gain of 36,000.
🏥 Education and health services led the way with 55,000 new jobs, followed by leisure and hospitality (22,000), manufacturing (17,000), and construction (15,000).
Not every industry shared in the gains. Financial activities lost 16,000 jobs, while professional and business services shed 11,000.
Pay continued to grow, too, with base pay rising 3.2% and gross pay increasing 4.7% from a year earlier.
The report offers another look at the labor market as the Federal Reserve weighs employment trends alongside persistent inflation.

There's a reason so many women business owners half-joke that their real title is "everything."
More women than ever are starting and running businesses, and they're doing it at a faster clip than the market overall.
Census data show women now own more than 14 million businesses nationwide, a number that's grown 26 percent since 2012, compared with 19 percent growth for businesses as a whole.
A lot of that growth is happening online, where women-owned businesses tend to be more digitally integrated than those owned by men.
It also means millions of women are managing key decisions from scratch:
💼 How income gets paid (salary, distributions, or owner draws) and what that means at budget time
💼 Which retirement vehicle fits, and how much room there is to contribute
💼 How healthcare, disability, and other insurance get sourced without an employer default
💼 How the business gets valued, and what a sale or transition would actually look like
💼 How personal finances stay untangled from the business's finances
Wearing a tall stack of hats doesn't make entrepreneurship harder than it's worth. Plenty of women running these businesses would say the trade-offs are part of the deal. But it does mean the hats keep stacking up, one on top of the other.
This month is a good time to tip our own hats to the women doing it all at once.

🌠 October is bringing a little celestial entertainment! The annual Draconid meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of October 8–9, with excellent viewing conditions thanks to an almost moonless sky.
Unlike many meteor showers that are best viewed in the early morning hours, the Draconids are an evening event. This year's peak is expected around 9 PM EDT on October 8, so there's no need to stay up until dawn. 🌌
Here's how to make the most of it:
🔭 Find a dark spot. Head somewhere away from city lights with a clear view of the sky.
✨ Give your eyes time to adjust. Allow about 30 minutes to get used to the darkness.
🌙 Leave the equipment at home. You won't need a telescope or binoculars. Just look up and take in as much of the sky as possible.
The Draconids typically produce around five meteors per hour under ideal conditions, although they've surprised skywatchers with spectacular displays in the past.
The shower runs from October 6–10, so you may have several opportunities to catch a shooting star, weather permitting.
Will you be watching? 🌠

The U.S. economy grew faster than previously estimated in the second quarter, with consumer spending and business investment contributing to the stronger performance.
The Commerce Department revised annualized GDP growth for April through June to 2.2%, up from its previous estimate of 1.5%.
Consumer spending, which accounts for approximately 70% of U.S. economic activity, was a major contributor. It increased at a 3.8% annualized rate, compared with just 0.7% in the first quarter.
While the upward revision exceeded economists' expectations, second-quarter growth was still below the 2.5% pace recorded during the first three months of 2026.

Cyber criminals pay extra attention to accounts tied to money.
A 2026 FBI study found that over 12,400 of those victims lost more than $100,000 each, and the average reported loss across elder fraud victims that year was $38,500. Here are a few habits to fine-tune your digital security this month:
🔐 Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere it's offered. Yes, it's annoying, but according to a 2026 CISA report, using it makes an account roughly 99 percent less likely to be broken into. It only takes a minute to set up.
🔐 Give every account its own password. Reusing one password means one leaked login unlocks everything else. A password manager handles this without requiring you to remember dozens of them.
🔐 When you go to the dentist, put a reminder on your calendar to also change your passwords. Changing passwords often makes your accounts just that much harder to reach.
🔐 Pause before clicking. Phishing remains the most commonly reported cybercrime in the country, more than any other category the FBI tracks.
🔐 Check statements regularly, and turn on account alerts. Catching something small and wrong early is a lot easier to unwind than catching something large and wrong months later.
🔐 Consider freezing your credit if you're not actively applying for new credit or loans. This takes 15 minutes, one time.
None of this requires becoming a security expert. Pick the one or two that you've been putting off, and do it this week.
