Yesterday, Ollie was adopted!!!

We were unable to post the great news before we had to deal with Kobe's deterioration.

Sometimes, cat rescue gives you great news followed immediately by terrible news.

Ollie has been adopted by friends who have supported the rescue for several years. We are so excited to find him such a great home.

We are so heartbroken today.

Kobe came to us at the same time as Sammy (and Ollie and Woody). His owner experienced loss of housing due to greedy ass landlords. They were surrendered to the rescue with plans to find homes for them.

Kobe was definitely a challenging cat! He got INSIDE the house not once, but twice! We were able to get him out from the walls and vaccinated. Once we released him to the general population, he jumped into a hole in the ceiling from recent plumbing work!

We were able to extricate him once again from under the floor boards and bring him back to the common areas with his friends.

He spent most of that time hiding under the couch. We tried to give him space to keep his stress lowered, while we monitored his behavior as we hoped he would open up to us.

But a few days ago, we noticed he had lost weight. The plan was to get him in an enclosure where we could monitor his eating and try not to stress him out.

This morning, when we brought him out from under the couch, we found he was quite thin, jaundiced, and paralyzed. The change over the course of a couple of days was dramatic and frightening. We took him to the hospital immediately.

We knew today was going to be a sad day, but we decided to do some bloodwork to better understand what had happened. It seems that he may have gotten cancer that deteriorated his spine and his liver.

We gave him a humane euthanization.

Ultimately, there is not always a solution or a happy ending. Sometimes, you do the best you can and life kicks you in the face anyway.

We updated Kobe's owner every step of the way.

Today, we said good-bye to Kobe. We gave him lots of head kisses and told him just how much he was loved.

Sometimes, cat rescuing is giving a cat a warm, clean home and good food for a very short time. It's the heart breaking reality of helping cats.

Kobe, we are so sad to see you go. Our hearts are shattered. You were a great cat and lots of people loved you.
