Hazel Tree Design Studio

Picture framing is truly a lost art.

While many people know us for interior or public space design, custom framing has been an integral part of Hazel Tree since the beginning. As independent frame shops become harder to find, we’re proud to continue the craft right here in West Hill.

Our co-owner and master framer Jon Haidet has almost 40 years of experience framing everything from original artwork to photographs, prints, treasured heirlooms and even offbeat objects like basketballs!

Homeowners, artists, corporations, museums and other local interior designers have trusted our team with pieces that deserve to be displayed beautifully and protected for decades to come.

And there’s a lot more to it than picking a frame.

With walls of molding samples and thousands of mat options, we consider the artwork, proportions, materials, preservation, where the piece will live and, of course, your personal style and budget.

Sometimes that means creating a shadow box for something that was never intended to hang on a wall. 🏀 Often, it means finding a creative solution that saves a customer money.

The combination of craftsmanship and problem-solving is why Jon has built a loyal following over the past four decades, and why we’re pretty proud of our five-star framing reviews!

Have a piece sitting at home waiting for the right frame? Bring it in. We’d love to help you finally get it on the wall.

And speaking of getting it on the wall: We do that, too! Call or email us if you’d like hourly art installation help. The right placement, height and arrangement make all the difference.

What does a textile sound like? 🎶

One of the things we love about working in commercial interior design is seeing just how far creativity can stretch.

At NeoConn's annual commercial design gathering in Chicago, Momentum Textiles & Wallcoverings shared a collaboration that turned three textile patterns by architect and designer Michael Ford into original musical compositions.

The patterns themselves helped shape the music, translating elements like color, geometry and rhythm from something you can see into something you can hear.

Momentum is also a company we know well at Hazel Tree. We specify many of their textiles and wallcoverings in our own commercial projects right here in Akron and throughout Northeast Ohio.

We love getting a glimpse at the experimentation happening across the design world… and then bringing that same curiosity back home to the spaces we create here!

Good design can do a whole lot more than make a room look nice. Sometimes, apparently, it can make music, too.

Field trip! No permission slips required.

We recently invited a few of our clients and headed out for a special art-shopping field trip around the Akron area to hand-select pieces for their spaces.

These clients were all at a stage in their projects with us where they were starting to think about art for their walls.

Our stops included Hazel Tree Design Studio, the art gallery at Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center, ART x LOVE, The Red Twig and Summit Artspace.

For us, sourcing art is about more than filling a blank wall.

Whenever we can, we design spaces that reflect and support the artists, galleries and spaces that keep our local creative community alive.

Where should we travel to next?

Fall has arrived, but we’re soaking up these last bits of sunshine while we still can. 🍂

Soon, evenings on the patio will give way to cozier days inside, making this a great time to start thinking about the spaces where you’ll be spending the colder months.

Have an indoor project you’ve been putting off? Or already dreaming about a new patio, garden or outdoor living space for next spring and summer? Now is the time to start planning.

Give us a call or send us an email at [email protected] to get the conversation started.

Good spaces take time, and we’d love to help you create one you’ll enjoy in every season.

Congrats to all the Akron Marathon Race Series runners making their way past our shop in their final mile!! Steve made a little inspirational sign for you!
Marathon Day is one of our favorite Akron holidays!

Some kitchens don't need a demo day. They just need a little love. 🏡✨

The original wish from this Merriman Hills client was for us to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room and replace the 60-year-old knotty pine cabinets. But as we worked through the design, we realized we’d be removing some of the home’s best character!

Instead, we revived the original cabinets with Krud Kutter and Wise Owl Paint’s Wood Salve, kept the charming pass-through, and added quartz countertops, a panel-ready fridge, Marmoleum flooring and wallpaper from January Paint & Wallpaper.

The finishing touch was a pendant light over the sink that perfectly matches the client’s family heirloom crystal glasses.

Swipe to see what we kept, what we changed and how it all came together.
