🕰️ This massive Gothic building was once one of the largest mental asylums in the country, and it's still standing in Athens, Ohio.

The Ridges, formerly the Athens Lunatic Asylum, operated for over a century, and its imposing Kirkbride-style architecture has made it one of the most recognizable, and eerie, buildings in the entire state. The site has a long and complicated history, and today parts of the building have been repurposed while other sections remain closed off, adding to its reputation as one of Ohio's most legendary haunted locations.

There's a block in downtown Youngstown where you can still make out the ghost of a hardware store sign if the afternoon light hits the brick just right. 🏚️

Youngstown was built on steel, and for most of the 20th century blocks like this one were full, storefronts humming with regulars, sidewalks busy before and after shift changes at the mills. When the steel industry collapsed in the late 1970s, it took a huge piece of the city's daily rhythm with it, and a lot of these buildings have sat quiet ever since.

What gets me is that the bones are still beautiful. The stone lintels, the cast iron window frames, all of it still standing, just waiting for the block to fill back in. 🧡

Road trips used to mean a map folded in the glove box and a few odd surprises along the way. In Ohio, one of those surprises is how many castle-like spots are tucked into the landscape, waiting where you least expect them.

Turrets, stone walls, steep roofs, and old-world details give these places a real fairytale feel without leaving the state. Some look like grand estates, others feel more like a storybook hideaway, but they all make you slow down and stare for a minute.
