The Akron Zoo received accreditation this week from The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Independent Accreditation Commission following a comprehensive inspection and formal hearing. AZA is the accrediting organization for the best zoos and aquariums in the United States and 11 other countries around the world. Currently, 255 zoos and aquariums meet the standards required to be accredited by the AZA. The Akron Zoo has been accredited by AZA consistently since 1989.

The rigorous accreditation process includes a detailed application and on-site review by a team of trained, accomplished professionals in the field to assure we are successfully meeting or exceeding all professional standards set by the Commission. The team reviews all aspects – animal care, safety for visitors and animals, veterinary care, conservation efforts, condition of all facilities, guest services, financial health and more.

AZA requires zoos and aquariums to complete the full accreditation process every five years in order to be considered for accreditation.

Does your high schooler want to work with animals? Register them for Wild Careers on Friday, Oct. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registered students will learn everything from animal training techniques to keeper responsibilities and the types of college programs that will help them get a truly wild career. This program follows an open house format, allowing students to attend sessions led by veterinary experts, animal care specialists and educational leaders.
