Surplus 1980 is a Bay Area post-punk rock band fronted by former Sleepytime Gorilla Museum percussionist, Moe! Built on the foundation laid by instrumental no-wave post-rock band, Mute Socialite, Surplus 1980's music is a thicker brew with an out-jazz touch and more than a dash of punk ferocity. Surplus 1980 has a well-chosen name—as long as you pick up on the right musical references—the skewed-punk/post-punk and spiky new wave ones: Essential Logic, Pere Ubu, The Fall, The Slits, The Ex, first-album Gang of Four. Surplus 1980 is a louder and faster band than any of those, but draws from the same well of shouty discordant rock ’n’ roll clamor, and exhibits the same joy in complaining. Chord progressions are less friendly than on a Chuck Berry record, but have the same elemental drive, and the drums—plus Staiano’s various re-purposed percussion metals and tools—are featured up front to make sure the audience doesn’t miss them. Surplus 1980 has released two records thus far, including 2013’s "Arterial Ends Here" and 2011’s "Relapse In Response," and plans for a third vinyl venture in 2018 with recording starting in September of 2017, as well as a large ensemble version with G.W.

Surplus 1980 will be releasing a pair of tracks from last year’s recording session as a single +1 release in time for Bandcamp Friday on 5 December! A task feat that we hope to accomplish, along with altering everyone to check out out and spread the word. It features our previous bassist, who also plays melodica on one track as well.
We are still in search of a bassist/vocalist/multi-whathaveyou, and hope to find a likely a fitting person who is not flaky and strong with their playing and communication.
