For years I bought dark roast for my drip machine because I thought darker meant stronger. Then I found out drip brewing takes 4-6 minutes, and that long extraction was just pulling out ashy, smoky flavors. Switched to a medium roast from Colombia and the cup got sweeter and more balanced. Also started buying whole bean and grinding right before brewing. The freshness difference after two weeks is real. If you're still using pre-ground, try whole bean for a week.
