Meet our artist…and guess the medium: these pieces of work are by RACHEL OEHLER and made with colored pencil.

Colored pencil is Rachel’s primary medium, and she finds it ideal for precision and for creating luminous layers of color. Her finely detailed landscape work concentrates on the subtle textures and tones of the terrain, transformed by the magic of atmosphere and light.

Another focus for Rachael is portraiture, where she looks beyond accurate depiction to reveal something of the life and character of her subjects.

Colored pencil is a medium that sounds simple, but far from just involving the direct application of color, the medium requires many layers and many kinds of strokes to build up the vibrancy and punch that makes Rachael’s work unique.

Work by five Gallery Calapooia artists will be featured on the Albany Open Studios Tour on Labor Day Weekend, including metal smith LORI GARCY, textile artist PAT SPARK, glass artists CAROL HOUK and STEVE TERHUNE, and ceramic artists UTE VERGIN. Here’s a bit more about our featured artist MARILYN LINDSLEY whose polymer clay jewelry and sculptures are in the gallery spotlight this month:

She began experimenting with polymer clay in the early 1980s and has benefitted from the work of pioneers in this medium. She counts Italian glass-working and Japanese metal-working techniques as influential to her current work with polymer.

Her work relies on simple lines and shapes for elegance of form and brilliant surface design for color, pattern and whimsy. She is constantly learning about jewelry-making and adding to her repertoire of techniques.

Here’s a little bit more about MARJORIE KINCH whose work is featured at the gallery this month:

As a child, Marjorie used any materials she could get her hands on to create paintings and drawings. She entered her first photography contest at age 12. Her paintings graced the walls of relative’s houses.

“Painting and photography are both meditation for me. Both are a way to express my feelings, a way to process what’s going on around me, and a way to be in the moment. They both connect to my soul, and through them I pass on to others a small piece of my heart,” says Marjorie.

Marjorie loves the fluidity and sparkle of watercolor, her favorite medium. Her paintings and photographs are in private and corporate collections in the U.S., Canada and Europe, and her work has been featured in national publications, as well as winning awards.
