The MLK Separated Bicycle Lane Pilot Project is taking shape!

Different types of delineators have now been added to the eastbound buffered bike lane on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. The eastbound portion appears to be in place from Arno St. to Oak St., with additional delineators planned for the westbound bike lane. That means the pilot is about halfway finished.

Once the project is complete, the City will launch an online survey to gather feedback on the new separated bike lanes.

In the meantime, ride down MLK and check it out!

And if you like what you see, contact your City Councilor and let them know. Protection like this can make biking feel more comfortable and predictable, and Albuquerque needs more projects like it throughout the city.

We'll have more updates as the project progresses.

New delineators are being installed along MLK as part of the City’s ongoing pilot study on bike lane protection.

Come celebrate the grand opening of this new traffic garden tonight! We’re excited to celebrate a great new resource for kids to learn safe biking and walking skills.

Come check out Albuquerque’s newest traffic garden!

Join us Friday, September 18, from 5–7 PM for an afternoon of biking, learning, and fun at the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation new traffic garden, located just off the Rail Trail between Mountain Road and Bellamah Avenue.

Traffic gardens — sometimes called Safety Towns, Safety Cities, or traffic playgrounds — are small-scale street networks where kids can learn to bike and practice real-world traffic skills in a safe, car-free environment.

Open to all ages! Bring your bike!

There will be free safety gear, swag, paletas, and more.

Come ride, explore the new space, and help us celebrate a great new resource for Albuquerque cyclists!

Sponsored by Esperanza Bicycle Safety Education Center, Kidical Mass ABQ, and BikeABQ.

Help shape the region’s transportation priorities

The Mid-Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MRMPO) is developing its Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for federal fiscal years 2028–2031, which helps guide transportation investments across the region.

Take this short survey to share what you think should be prioritized when it comes to transportation in our region. Survey results will be shared with agencies as they prepare their project proposals.

Take the survey: https://midregionspeaks.org/mrmpotip

There will be additional opportunities for public engagement as the process continues in the coming months.

Here is the link to sign up for public comment for O-26-55 at tomorrow night's City Council meeting: https://www.cabq.gov/council/find-your-councilor/public-comments/public-comment-sign-up-sep-9-2026-council-meeting

Don’t wait for a big project to fix a known safety problem.

Albuquerque needs more tools to make our streets safer — and O-26-55 would give the city another one.

Quick Build projects can include improved street markings, flexible posts, safer crossings, pedestrian refuge areas, protected bike lanes, and changes that discourage dangerous turns. These treatments can be installed relatively quickly and at a lower cost than major reconstruction, while giving the city the flexibility to adjust them as we learn what works.

Most importantly, Quick Builds give Albuquerque a way to address known safety problems now, rather than waiting for a major capital project — or waiting until someone is seriously injured or killed.

O-26-55 has already passed the Land Use, Planning & Zoning Committee unanimously. It now moves to the full City Council for a final vote.

The legislation is anticipated to be on the agenda for the Wednesday, September 9 City Council meeting, although the agenda has not yet been posted.

Please contact your City Councilor now and let them know that you support O-26-55 and want them to vote YES. It’s important that Councilors hear from constituents before the meeting.

We’ll also share a link to sign up for public comment at the Council meeting as soon as that information becomes available.

Let’s give Albuquerque more tools to build safer streets.

BikeABQ is proud to support O-26-55.

Ride your bike to the Balloon Fiesta!

BikeABQ is leading rides to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on Saturday, October 3, and we’re looking for ride marshals to lead groups from neighborhoods around town and connect with us on the North Diversion Channel Trail.

Getting to the Fiesta by bike is by far the best way to go: skip the traffic, avoid paying for parking, and park your bike for FREE at the bike valet.

We’ll arrive at Balloon Fiesta Park around 6:40 a.m., giving riders time to park their bikes and enjoy the 7:00 a.m. Mass Ascension.

Want to lead a ride from your neighborhood? Email [email protected] to let us know you’re interested.

Let’s get to the Fiesta by bike!
