Tamarind Institute
Where lithography lives. A renowned center for collaborative printmaking. Gallery open to public.
Tamarind Institute is widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography. Our state-of-the-art facility — home to a professional workshop, gallery, and educational institute — is now located along Route 66 in Albuquerque in affiliation with the College of Fine Arts at The University of New Mexico. We house an extensive archive of historic material and a vast print inventory of more than 8,000 lithographs that our team of highly trained printers, curators, and print experts share with collectors and the print community. Tamarind’s educational publications and technical resources are found wherever printmaking is taught and our extensive network of alumni are at the helm of workshops and art departments all over the world.

Rachel Perry at Tamarind Sept 15.
In recent announcements of Rachel Perry’s mural created with Tufts University Art Galleries, she writes about the material of boxes, the subject of both a new series of Tamarind editions and TUAG’s 5th iteration of the Jackson Lot Mural in Medford, MA, by SMFA alumna Perry.
“For years I have been unfolding and saving boxes, those I bring inside and others that arrive by delivery services. I’ve used them as inspiration and material in my work, making sculptures, drawings, photographs, textiles, and even videos out of them, always thinking about converting something rapidly used up into a meditation on the slowness of art making. The work is an antidote to the flattened experience of digital life. The box’s strangeness has always been there, hidden; here you can fold it in your mind.”

Introducing Tamarind Apprentice Printer Mim Penrose
Miriam (Mim) Penrose is training with Master Printer Valpuri Remling in the Professional Workshop through 2027. She will actively participate in artist collaborations, new print editioning, research projects, and general workshop operations. Her training will lead to the designation of Tamarind Master Printer.
Penrose writes, "I hope to use this opportunity to gain as much experience as possible and continue to grow as a printmaker. In the spirit of Tamarind's mission to promote lithography around the world, I plan to use the skills I develop during this time to strengthen the tradition of collaborative lithography in Australia by producing fine art lithographs and sharing my knowledge through educational programs.”

Welcoming Ulises Lerma Ramos, Tamarind’s inaugural Education Fellow
2025-2026 graduating Tamarind printer Ramos joins the workshop to work alongside Education Director Brandon Gunn through the academic year. He will participate in research, testing materials, leading technical demonstrations, collaborating with invited UNM faculty artists, and starting up a new short-course workshop program at Tamarind.
Ramos writes, “My interest in teaching is rooted in the mentorship I received early in my printmaking education. When I asked my first instructor why they invested so much time and care in my development, they explained that they understood the difficulty of learning the medium and recognized my dedication. That moment shaped my sense of responsibility to provide that same level of support, clarity, and encouragement to others entering the field. Since then, I have approached teaching not simply as instruction, but as a form of stewardship of the discipline.”
