The goal of my motherhood and my photography is not perfection because perfection sets an expectation that is honestly subjective to one person. The striving tends to leave out the other people involved and becomes a self serving pursuit. Really… what is the perfect photo? What is the perfect motherhood? Instead, I realize that connection and seeing the real, living people before me results in fulfillment for all involved. My children need a present mother seeking connection. I need that too. That mindset behind the camera means you can breathe and enjoy your one year old in a field of flowers. I have finished so many sessions and the feedback is wow… that was painless, actually enjoyable and I can’t wait to see what we captured… all because we dropped the perfection.

I think of Mary the mother of Jesus who would treasure and ponder in her heart the wonderful things she observed about her child. Following her example, we get to treasure and ponder our own children made in the image of God.

When I entered Johnell’s birthing space, the relief and tears that came over her was deeply impactful for me. Her desire was to have memories of her fourth birth as she didn’t have many from her previous births. Me being there meant her story would be told.

The story I captured was one of a deep connection to her body and baby in the womb. It was the accumulation of months preparing her space, body and mind for her daughter to enter the world. The joy of beholding a face never before seen and experiencing that with her family and support team. Whether you are birthing at home, at a birth center or a hospital there are 3 things Johnell had that I pray every mother would also:

1. A community that supports and respects your voice.
2. Understanding of birth & your body
3. Preparation mentally, physically and spiritually
