Heading to the New Mexico State Fair this weekend? Make a plan to have fun and get home safely:
Go with people you trust—and choose a meet-up spot in case you get separated.
Keep your phone charged and share your plans with someone you trust.
Plan your ride home before you go. Never feel pressured to leave with someone.
Keep an eye on your drink, and only accept beverages you see opened or poured.
Trust your instincts. You never owe anyone your time, attention, or an explanation.
If something feels wrong, get to a well-lit, populated area and ask fair staff or security for help. In an emergency, call 911.
Your safety matters. Have fun, look out for one another, and trust your gut.

What is The Red Zone?
The Red Zone is the period from fall move-in through Thanksgiving break, when college students face a heightened risk of sexual violence.
More than 50% of college sexual assaults are reported to occur between August and November.
Who is vulnerable?
New students rarely know how to contact campus security or where to report misconduct. They are away from home and usually lack a tight-knit, trusted group of friends to watch their back.
Party & Hookup Culture: The influx of welcome-back parties, Greek life "rush" events, and independence creates high-risk social environments.
Alcohol: Heavy drinking often peaks during these weeks, blurring boundaries and impairing judgment for students who may be drinking for the first time.
How to be safe.
Use the Buddy System: Never leave a party, bar, or event alone or with a stranger.
Control Your Drinks: Pour your own drinks, never leave them unattended, and know your personal limits.
Save Emergency Contacts: Program campus police, local transit, and trusted friends into your phone immediately.
Locate Campus Resources: Identify the physical location of the campus student health center and safety escorts during orientation.
Practice Active Bystander Intervention: If you see an aggressive or unsafe situation involving a peer, step in or alert authorities immediately.
Help is available.
Everyone deserves to feel safe as they begin this new chapter.

Swipe to learn how SA trauma physically impacts the brain and body.
Trauma isn't just "in your head"—it reshapes how your nervous system operates to keep you safe.
🧠 THE BRAIN:• Amygdala: Your fear center stays on high alert, making peace hard to find.• Prefrontal Cortex: The logic center goes offline, making decision-making exhausting.• Hippocampus: The memory center gets disrupted, causing vivid flashbacks or missing pieces.
🌱 THE BODY:• Survival Freeze: Involuntary paralysis or numbness is a physical defense mechanism.• Stress Overload: Constant cortisol floods your system, leading to chronic fatigue.• Stored Tension: Trauma physically settles into muscles, causing aches and digestive issues.
Healing is a physical process, not just a mental one. Give your body time to unlearn the survival state. You are not broken; your body is trying to protect you. ❤️
