It’s an easy trap to fall into — to secretly hope our kids will inherit our strengths, share our passions, or at least be a personality type we know how to handle.

But then they show up — and they are completely themselves.

Maybe they are quieter than we wanted, louder than we can handle, or obsessed with things we don't understand.

Our immediate, exhausting instinct is to start nudging. We try to chip away at their quirks, correct their natural rhythm, and shape them into a version that makes our lives easier.

But you can’t edit a child’s factory settings.

When we constantly try to tweak their natural wiring, we don't actually change them. We just teach them that they are a disappointment. So they stop trusting their own instincts and start walking on eggshells, believing that love is tied to a performance.

Our job isn't to build them from scratch. It is simply to be the one place on earth where they never have to apologize for how they are made.

Because while we don't get to choose who walks through the door, our reaction dictates whether they step out into the world entirely at peace with the person they became. ❤️
